History

Using the smallest examples of the breed , the miniature dachshund came through selective and careful breeding. Though the popularity was dropping due to breeds German Connection , the efforts of the dedicated breeder did not permit the dogs to get vanished. Due to the charming nature , they are most popular among small dogs.

Variations

  1. The wire-haired miniature dachshund  bred with the Miniature Schnauzer.

2 The long-haired miniature dachshund bred with the Papillion.

3The smooth haired miniature dachshund  bred with the Miniature Pinscher.

Temperament & Behavior

Known as a courageous dog, the miniature dachshund is social, aggressive and loyal at the same time. This breed possesses a high spirit and independent in nature. They are tolerant to strangers to some level and can bark loudly, once the introductory period is over. By a keen nose, they have a good sense of trailing. Based on the qualities of their parents, the different varieties have their definition of charm. The breed is relatively easy with older children and not good with young kids. They travel well with the owners and are devoted to the family. Right guarding instinct makes them an excellent guarding dog. For owners, specific behavioral issues make the dog an unpredictable breed.

Exercise

The miniature dachshund requires a lot of practice. Long walks are good for them, or some equal amount of jogging can keep them fit. Since the breed has lots of stamina and zeal, they enjoy playing and running sessions in open areas or parks.

Grooming

The breed is an average shedder. Hence, a routine rundown of brushing and daily combing is the need for the race along with professional trimming twice a year is enough. Checkup of eyes, ears, and teeth is necessary on a weekly basis, and occasional trimming of the nails is essential. There are various types of clothing available in the market and people can dress up the miniature dachshund with holiday clothing, sweaters, and harnesses.

Health Problems

The breed tends to get lazy and overweight. Hence, in such circumstances proper care is necessary. It can suffer from backbone problem. They also face spinal disc problem, mast cell tumors, urinary tract infections, teeth and gum problems, diabetes, deafness, cardiac issues, cushion disease, intervertebral disc disease, progressive retinal atrophy and canine diabetes mellitus.

Training

Before adopting this breed, it is essential to know about them. Training of potty is a necessity for this dog, and hence taking out the dog for 10 to 15 minutes after finishing eating and drinking is necessary. The same place is  necessary for potty training, and the trainer needs to point the area out. Since the dog barks very loudly, when confined in crates, hence crate training is difficult for this breed. When first starting with leash training, a young miniature is likely to resist. Leash training will familiarize the dog with leash and permit it to associate with the leash walking.

Feeding

The breed needs good quality health dog food, which is dry. The suggested amount is ½ to 1 ½ cups per day, segregated in two different meals.
