History

Joe Bowman, a huntsman, carefully started breeding Patterdale Terrier in the rugged and harsh environment in England. In those days, foxes were the biggest threat to the cattle, so these dogs were used as a Predator controller. Their use to hunt down foxes and other predators were made illegal in England and Wales in the year 2004 under the Hunting Act.

Temperament & Personality

Patterdale puppies are bold and confident against the typicalities of an ordinary pup. They are working dogs capable of doing high energy activities. Socialising with other dogs is difficult for them but many keep these dogs as a pet because of their highly energetic. Sedentary households should avoid keeping these dogs as pet.The owner should be accustomed to the temperament and nature of a Terrier. In recent years, Patterdale Terriers are seen participating in different agility games showing their capabilities as a working dog.

Exercise

These highly energetic dogs need two long walks a day to keep itself fit and healthy. They also need a big and open yard to run freely.

Grooming

Instead of frequent grooming, minimal trimming and stripping will do the job. As this breed does minimal shedding, the owner should use a vacuum cleaner frequently to keep the house clean.


Health Problems

The Patterdale may get issues like Conjunctivitis, Cataracts, cuts, and scrapes when they hunt. They may also suffer from Small dog syndrome. Some dogs may develop skin allergy due to several environmental reasons.

Training

It is because the Patterdale is a stubborn breed, adopt a firm and consistent approach. Frequent food rewards and praises once in a while will help in the training process. In addition to obedience training, they can also be trained in hunting sports.

Feeding

High energy dog breeds like the Patterdale needs a food formulated especially for the active dogs. Two months old needs 48-102 grams of quality dog foods and adult dogs need 80 grams to 170 grams of grains depending on their health, size, height, and weight.
