History

The Spinone Italiano hails from the beautiful country of Italy. They are an ancient all-purpose hunting dog, and some even consider them as one of the oldest known Griffon varieties in existence. Some experts speculate that these dogs share their ancestry with the early French hounds, the Griffons, and the Barbets which were crossed to create this breed. Regardless of such facts, historians have traced its history dating back as long as 500 BC.

They are a large and well-muscled breed with strong bones and the entire body weight is well proportioned to the size of the dog. The head is stable, and the muzzle is square when viewed from the front. The nose is spongy and large, with two open nostrils. The tail stays either horizontally up or down.

Temperament & Personality

Known for their distinctive appearance and zest for life, the Spinone Italiano is a real social butterfly. It has the stamina and endurance of the typical Hunting dogs and can work all day long. Though they are slow movers, these dogs will be in their happiest self when they are doing something with their family, be it as simple as watching the TV or going on a hiking trip with their owner. It is a retriever breed, so it will bring things like shoes, toys, etc. to its owner.

With their physical sturdiness, they can be a great companion dog for the small children, as long as they treat the Spinone with respect and love. Some Spinone Italianos will get along well with other animals, especially other dogs and felines provided they are raised with them. Being naturally affectionate and loyal, these dogs make an excellent and devoted dog to their families

Care

Exercise

This breed loves to jump, dig, and retrieve, so needs a fenced yard with an area of its own. Being social, they enjoy group activities, such as a romp around the yard area. It will be an excellent candidate for several dog sports and games, such as field trials, hunting tests, agility sports, and tracking games.

Being a natural slow walker, these dogs are not great running companions, and only need a daily short walk in the dog park. However, if deprived of regular activities, these dogs can become destructive and accustomed to frequent and random barkings.

Grooming

The Spinone Italiano has a dense and wiry coat, which is instinctively weather resistant and protects the dog from debris. As the dog lacks an undercoat, this breed only needs an occasional brushing and hand stripping to remove the dead hair.

For the stripping purposes, the owner can use a stripping knife. Because of their wiry coat, they only need bathing when dirty or muddy. The owner can keep the dog’s ear infection free, by cleaning them every week. Clean their teethc with a Vet approved toothpaste and toothbrush.

Health Problems

This breed can suffer from health problems such as:

  • Hip and Elbow Dysplasia
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Entropion
  • Otitis Externa
  • Cataracts
  • Bloating
  • Ataxia

Occasional tests such as Blood tests, Thyroid tests, X-Rays, and Eye Examinations will protect it against various diseases.

Training

Spinones are highly trainable and need an intelligent trainer who is consistent, patient, and firm. They are incredibly motivated and eager to please their owners. Any training should be complemented with food rewards and frequent praises, which will accelerate the overall training process.

Feeding

Because of their highly energetic lifestyle, these dogs need a well- balanced diet. It will help in maintaining their energy levels and overall health and fitness
