History

The Brazilian Terrier (BT) was developed by crossing Jack Russell Terriers, Miniature Pinchers and large Chihuahuas. They were used to hunt small game both individually and in packs. It’s been more than a century since their existence, but BT is prevalent only in Brazil and was recognized in 1973.

Temperament & Personality

The BT is a spirited and friendly dog which has a personality similar to other terriers. Being intelligent and alert, it requires lots of physical and mental stimulation to stay healthy. Do not leave it alone in a yard as it loves digging holes. Their short height does not hold them from being aggressive, which is why they are good watchdogs. As this breed was developed from hunting, these dogs have a strong prey drive and chase other animals constantly.

Exercise

Although it is small in size, the BT has high exercise requirements and cannot live an apartment life. It needs long walks and play sessions daily. Without sufficient exercise, it may grow destructive behavior. Access to a yard with fences or dog parks is essential.

Grooming

The dog’s short coat is easy to maintain. It sheds averagely, so look out for hairs around the home and brush the coat twice a week. Bath the dog only when it is dirty to protect the natural oils of the skin. Professional grooming is not necessary. Clean its ears every week and check the eyes to avoid infections.

Health Problems

The BT is a relatively healthy dog but is prone to issues like eye problems, ear infections, skin allergies and injuries in the field.

Training

These dogs have inborn natural instincts and respond well to training if the owner is firm and consistent. Without a headstrong and willful leader, the BT will develop dog syndrome and bad manners. To curb their aggression, begin socialization and obedience training at an early age. Be patient, use positive methods, treats and praises while training them. It gets distracted easily so train in it a controlled environment.

Feeding

Brazilian Terriers have a fast metabolism and need high-quality foods containing protein and fat. The amount of food they eat depends on their age so consult a vet regarding this.
