History

The Cocker-Pei is a hybrid made by crossing a Chinese Shar-Pei and a Cocker Spaniel. The breed was intended to be a 50-50 mix, but this is not always the case as they have been bred over a long time. It is a modern breed, so there is no documentation about its history.

Temperament & Personality

The Cocker Spaniel is an affectionate, friendly and a social dog. Even though they are good with children and other animals, they require socialization skills. It is eager to please, energetic and curious. They spend time with chew toys and live comfortably at home. It may have hunting instincts so make sure to leash it. Although they are useful as watchdogs, stay cautious while introducing them to strangers as they act aggressively towards them.

Exercise

This is an active dog and needs regular mental and physical activities to maintain its health. Access to a secure yard or a dog park will help it to run around freely. It can get tired quickly and may need to take some rest. Cocker-Pei adjusts to apartment life provided that it has enough room and gets outdoor activities.

Grooming

Brush the coat 2-3 times a week to maintain its healthy skin. It sheds low to moderate amount; however, it will release more hair during summers. Bathing should be occasional and wipe its wrinkles to prevent problems. Use a cleaning solution and cotton to clean its ear every week. Take it to a professional groomer to cut its nail safely and brush its teeth at least twice a week.

Health Problems

Major health issues include hypothyroidism, cancer, patellar luxation, bloat, epilepsy, skin problem, swollen hock syndrome, etc. Look for the health clearances of the dog’s parent before buying a Cocker-Pei.

Training

It is easier to train Cocker-Pei in comparison to other dogs. Early obedience and socialization training is vital. These dogs are intelligent and might get stubborn, so a consistent and firm owner is necessary. Use positive methods and praises to keep it in the right frame of mind.

Feeding

Providing the Cocker-Pei with three cups of high-quality dry dog food will fulfill its nutritional requirements. The amount of food the dog eats depends on its age and metabolism.
