History

Lancashire Heeler is a small sized dog an it is believed to be the descendants of the  Manchester Terrier. It has a short leg as compared to the body which gives it an unbalanced appearance. This dog has a set of erect and full ears, well muscled, stiff back and high set tail. It was highly used as a farm dog as it can control cattle efficiently. This breed is also an efficient ratter and was developed to help to clear the farm from insects which harm the crop. Apart from being a farm dog, it is also a companion dog.

Temperament & Personality

Lancashire Heeler is a courageous, loyal and brave dog with a cheerful attitude. They can be stubborn and mischievous if training sessions are not provided timely. They are vigilant to strangers but very friendly with children. To ensure the safety of the dog and children, interactions with infants need supervision. They possess right terrier instincts independent i.e. lively and insightful. This dog barks at strangers or other pets if threatened inside its territory.

Exercise

These dogs are highly energetic and athletic. Therefore they require a plethora of activities every day. Long walks in the morning or evening couple with running and interactive games will keep the dog happy and amused. Puzzles and cube buster games will also keep their mind busy and help in mental stimulation.

Grooming

Grooming requirements are low for Lancashire puppies as it requires bathing only a few times a year. However, this breed needs brushing every day and a grooming mitt or slicker brush is good for proper brushing. It is crucial to keep the undercoat dry after bathing as the coat can hold the moisture close to the skin which may cause bacterial and fungal infections.

Health Problems

This breed is healthy, but with increasing age, it can suffer from Cataracts, Lens Luxation and Patellar Luxation. Occasional tests for their well-being include Knee, eyes, X-rays, Eye- Examination, Physical Examination, etc.

Training

Lancashire Heeler requires training from their puppyhood as they become stubborn and wicked with increasing age. Proper socialization and obedience training will help the dog to behave correctly. Introduction with other pets and new people will help the dog stay calm and not aggressive. Offering treats on completing tasks with divided training sessions will help the dog to learn faster.

Feeding

1 -1.5 of dry dog food will be adequate to keep up with the energy level of this breed.
