History

Pharaoh Hound is an ancient breed, and its root can be traced back to 3000 B.C in Egypt. Their ancestors were described as the hound dogs in various Egyptian writings. They are popular for their excellent hunting abilities and loyalty. These dogs were brought to Malta from Egypt by the traders and bred for past 2,000 years. The Maltese used them for catching rabbits, hunting and called by the name of “Kelb tal-Fenek” or “Rabbit Dog.” Moreover, it was later imported in England and US in the early 1960s and the pharaohs we see today are almost like the original dogs. It is one of the famous Egyptian dog breeds.

Temperament & Personality

Pharaoh Hound has a remarkable personality, and they are affectionate, gentle, and lovable to their owners. It is famous for its unusual or clownish character in the family. Like other hounds, these dogs have a healthy attitude and remain distant from strangers. Moreover,, a well-socialized dog will mix well with other canines and children. They have a sensitive nature and can identify its owner’s feelings and even suffer from frustration. They make excellent watchdogs as they often bark at a new sound or suspicious movement.

Exercise

Pharaoh Hounds puppies and full grown dogs are highly energetic and require a massive exercising schedule. Their build is athletic and needs to run various times a week in the yard. However, the yard requires minimum 6 feet high fences as they are amazing jumpers and can leap over a small wall. They can live a condo life as long as they get enough exercise and running space. Additionally, regular walking for at least 30 minutes a day will also keep the dog healthy and fit. Avoid outdoor exercising on wet and cold weather as they quickly catch a cold because of their thin skin.

Grooming

They have a very short and thin coat which makes maintenance easy. Brushing with a rubber curry brush once a week is optimal to remove dead hairs. To avoid overproduction of oils in the skin, bathe the dog when necessary. Nails will need clipping when they overgrow while brushing teeth regularly will prevent tartar collection and maintain oral health. These dogs do not have any odor.

Health Problems

Pharaoh hound is healthy, but problems like Anesthesia Sensitivity /Allergy is seen in some dogs. However, blood test, physical examination and random veteran visits will keep the dog healthy.

Training

Introducing the dog to new people or pets will socialize the dog and will be able to adapt unexpected and sudden changes. Teaching them to walk on a leash becomes crucial as rabbits, cats, vermin and smaller canines trigger their prey drive.

Feeding

Adut dogs will require commercial dry dog food of about 1 ½ to 2 cups every day. The meal divided into two halves will help in easy digestion.
