History

The Picardy Spaniel breed is one of the oldest continental Spaniel breeds originated before the French revolution. This breed used to be a hunting breed and gun dogs. This breed crossed with many British hunting dogs in the 19th century that led to the change in the appearance and the existing breed’s purpose that leads to the development of his cousin, the Blue Picardy Spaniel. This type of race recognized by various kennel club and associations like North American Kennel Club, American Rare Breed Association, United Kennel Club, Federation Cynologique Internationale and Continental Kennel Club.

Varieties

There are various Spaniel type breeds like Large Munsterlander and Drentse Patrijshond which are of larger sizes. The smaller races are Drentse which measures 55-65 cm and the Munsterlander measures 58-64 cm.

Temperament & Personality

Picardy Spaniel breeds are gentle and intelligent who are incredibly loyal towards their masters and also bonds well with the family members. They are a perfect playmate for kids, who gets well with other pets and dogs present in the house. In France, they are still presently used to hunt pheasants and snipes in swamps and wooded region.

Care

Spaniel breed is a perfect playmate for kids but as they are retrieving instinct in nature supervision is compulsory while interacting with small animals. Climatic condition is not a problem for them as they can adapt to both cold and hot temperatures.

Exercise

As the dog used as a hunting breed, a fair amount of training is needed. Long walks or jogging on a daily basis is the minimum requirement. Picardy also loves to run in a fenced yard.

Grooming

The coat of this breed is easy to maintain. Brushing its coat once in a week will keep its coat clean and mat-free. As there are chances for yeast infection, cleaning of ears needed at regular intervals. The nails require clipping when they overgrow.


Health Problems

Although this breed possesses a long lifespan, it has a high risk for ear infections as the ears are floppy. If it is overfed or under-exercised, then there is also a risk for obesity.

Training

This type of hunting breeds loves to excel in various sports and easy to train. They best respond to positive-reinforcement training. Yelling or punishing the dog would lead to negative impact as it will hamper the bonding with the dog.

Feeding

The diet should be of high- quality according to its size. try not to overfeed as it can lead to obesity and many other health problems.
