History

The Westiepoo is the cross between the West Highland White Terrier and the Toy Poodle breed. Experts say that these dogs might have originated in the early 70’s in the USA. They share their blood and ancestry with the Poodle race. Earlier experts used to say that these dogs are Purebred, as they have the parentage of two Purebreds, namely, the West Highland White Terrier and the Toy Poodle. In the contemporary scenario, experts consider these dogs as the second generation breed of dogs. It is because a new Westiepoo can be the offspring of two Westiepoos.

They are light in weight and looks extremely cute with their small expressive eyes, a button-like nose, and a pair of droopy ears. With all these physical traits combined, these dogs seem no less than small cotton candy.

Temperament & Personality

Westie mix is a happy go lucky dog and will be in their happiest self when they sense the presence of their family members around them. They will quickly get along with the house pets, even with other canines. These are also great companion dogs, and along with their compact size, these dogs also are an excellent fit for apartment life. The Westiepoo will not be an excellent fit for the single ones, especially the ones who have to stay out of their house, for an extended period. These Westie and Poodle mix are considered to be extremely vocal, and will never shy away from voicing their needs and opinions in the form of constant barking or growling.

Dog experts always recommend that a potential owner should first go thorough research on any breed, before buying one for him. As the beforementioned statement goes by, a probable buyer of this breed should first research on the Westiepoo. A great way to start this is to refer to magazines on the Westiepoos. Again no definitive statements on this breed’s personality and other things are forecastable, as the Westiepoo can incline towards any of its parents.

Care

Exercise

In case of apartment living, these dogs will need a daily leash walk, or a vigorous play session, or family activities. In the context of exercise, these dogs also need an energetic romp session in the yard area. These dogs thrive well in all types of living places, but especially countryside. If deprived of proper exercise regimen, these dogs can become destructive and disobedient.

Grooming

Some can think that these dogs need heavy grooming and maintenance, but that fact is they need as much as minimal maintenance as required. They are famous for their curly hair, which covers their entire body from the head to the toes, which needs brushing once in a week. Because of their typical messy coat texture, and the disheveling of the coat crops up, even after they get their bath.

Health Problems

The Westiepoo dog can suffer from issues such as Patellar Luxation, Canine Hip Dysplasia, Addison's disease, Cushing’ disease, and Hypothyroidism.

Training

The Westiepoo pup will be a quick learner and will learn simple tricks and commands in one go. Things like pack-leader training, socialization training, obedience training, will be great options to start with. Some Westiepoo owners report that these dogs are tough to train in housebreaking.

Feeding

The owner isc suggested fixing the diet plan depending on the size, height, weight, health, and activities of the dog.
