History

Alusky is a cross between the Alaskan malamute and Siberian husky having an appearance similar to the wolf. They will stop you in your tracks, but will surprise you with his friendliness, playfulness, and loyalty.

Difference between Husky and Malamute

Although both are large breeds, Malamute is larger among the two. An Husky may reach a height of 20-24 inches weighing anywhere between 35 to 60 pounds. On the other hand, a Malamute isnt that tall and usually betwee20-23 inches. However, they can surpass husky in bulk weighing anywhere between 75 to 85 pounds.

Thick coat of Malmutes require daily brushing to watch for mats or hot spots. You need to bathe them every 6-8 weeks and more frequently when they are full-grown. Huskies need less maintenance requiring brushings each week. Also as they have a self-cleaning nature, you can do away with a couple of baths each year.

Comination of the two breeds can result in a mix of features. Hence, you will have to be very careful and constantly keep in touch with a veterinarian to take adequate care of your furry friend.

Temperament & Personality

Siberian Husky Malamute mix puppies are very friendly and loyal to their family. They are playful and outgoing with everyone, even strangers, which is why they are not used as guard dogs. With proper socialization, they behave well with other pets and children, so it is good to socialize them as puppies. These dogs love to please their owners and are sensitive to harsh tones. However, it hates being left alone and doing so might lead to dangerous habits like digging and chewing.

Care

Exercise

Like its parents, Alusky is full of energy and needs an owner who is equally active and willing to give time. Playing games is vital in addition to daily walks for mental stimulation. Do not over exercise the dog in hot conditions because it is only suited to cool weather. Activities which they love are jogging, sledding, pulling weights, carting and racing. Access to a fenced yard will be better and safer for the dog’s exercises.

Grooming

Use an undercoat rake or a slicker brush to comb the Alusky’s coat during spring because it sheds heavily during that season. For the rest of the year, brushing the coat once or twice a week is enough. Baths are needed only when the dog gets too dirty. Daily brushing and trimming of their nails when they get long is necessary.

Health Problems

This is a relatively healthy breed and the only common problems are hip dysplasia, eye problems, and ear infections.

Training Tips

Husky Mix Dogs are intelligent but stubborn, so their owner needs to be firm. It has a long memory and doesn’t respond well to punishments and strict methods of training. Using positive methods like praising the dog and treating it with snacks is significant. Early socialization and obedience training is essential to help them interact with the world around it. Even a full grown malamute husky needs regular training and guidance.

Feeding

High-quality dog food can be fed to the Alusky 4-5 times daily. Canned foods are best dog food for husky malamute while you may give them food rich in proteins suitable for dogs.
