History

The American eagle dogs are a mixed breed of American Eskimo and the Beagle. They are also called American Eskimo dog mix, Beagle or an Eskimo Beagle. Generally small to medium in size, they belong to the collection of mixed dog breeds, often referred as designer dogs. They came into existence during the last twenty to thirty years since the 1990s. However, it is not clear enough from where this breed originated. There is very limited information available on them, but it is known that they have the best features of both its parents. The American Eskimo, dogs, were members of the Spitz family and had Nordic features, fox-faced and with profuse coats. They were commonly found in the German communities and became the popular circus entertainers later. These American eagle dogs have inherited their traits of lively nature and playfulness.

Temperament and Personality

The American eagle dogs are quite affectionate and loving in nature and they can be excellent as family pets. They are very energetic and well-behaved but have the bad habit of digging and chewing. They remain extremely friendly and love to spend time with the family members. American eagle also loves being the center of attraction and do not like to be left alone for long periods. These dogs are extroverts, outgoing, intelligent and enjoy having fun with kids. Being active dogs, they are playful and love to take part in the family game.

Care

Exercise

American eagle dogs can gain weight pretty quickly and hence require exercise on a daily basis, be it swimming, training or walk or merely playing games with the family. They want need walks at least two hours a day. You can take them along for long walks or even indoor activities can keep them happy and healthy. They enjoy tug of war, fetching and chasing games and are apt for apartment living. These dogs need an active dog owner who will be able to take care of his energetic skills and make use of this dynamic nature.

Grooming

The American eagle dogs need to be groomed as they have a thick double coat and are easy to groom and brush. The dense coat needs to be brushed daily when shedding to keep it in the best condition. If needed you may give them a bath in case they are covered in mud, dirty or smelly. The owner must check their ears once in a week to detect if there is any inflammation. You may wipe the ears with a damp cloth gently but make sure not to push on the inner side as it may cause an injury. Keep their teeth clean and brush them thrice for a week to keep them fine. Also, nails should be trimmed occasionally if long.

Health Problems

Diseases are mainly inherited from the parents which include various eye problems including retinal issues, Legg Perthes, Intervertebral disk disease, epilepsy, Beagle dwarfism, Hypothyroidism, hip dysplasia and many ear infections too. The eyes must also be checked frequently.

Training

The American eagle dogs are easy to train as they are highly active. They are good pupils since the time they are pups. You must begin training them consistently starting from the early days when brought to home as puppies. Make sure that you remain firm and consistent with them. On the contrary, do not be too harsh or it may cause an adverse effect. Additionally, pet owners should be compassionate and be caring towards them as it can help in teaching them good manners and dog etiquettes. Instead of punishing them, you can treat them with rewards and praises for good behavior which would encourage and satisfy them. They respond very well to your commands if you get along well while training.

Feeding

The American eagle dogs tend to gain weight very easily so you must take care that they are not overfed. They must eat a balanced amount of food in their daily diet. If dry foods are given, make sure that they are high-quality foods. More importantly, quality of the foods should never be compromised. Avoid offering them high-fat diets as they are most vulnerable to weight gain. Chicken meals would be great for them as they are highly digestible and also high protein foods. You may give them good sources of Omega 6 fatty acid foods to keep the skin and their coat healthy. Lastly, chicken must be given dry or mixed in your pet’s meals to provide a high dose of protein.
