 History

The American Ori Pei was bred by Aaron Silver in North America in the 1970s. It is a cross between two purebreds, the Shar-Pei with the Pug. The primary motive was to lessen the health issue of the Shar Pei. It is a designer breed and has a pug like an appearance with moderate wrinkles. Its stocky robust body accompanies the square-shaped muzzle, massive round head, thin ears, and dark eyes.

Interesting Facts

  • Was bred to hunt guard livestock, herd and also for dog fights.
  • Barks instantly at the sound of the ringing bell.
  • Created to correct the health issues of their parental breed.

Temperament and Personality

The American Ori Pei is a smart and quick learner with a good sense of humor and is highly intelligent, loving and playful with a stubborn nature but not an aggressive one. They do not bark unnecessarily but are excellent watch-keepers.

Socializing is one of the best qualities in them as they love to play with kids and even with other small animals. It loves making funny faces and looking at a person whenever they speak, they are highly affectionate and protective. They are full of curiosity and can be bold at times which can get them in trouble. The American Ori Pei being fair-tempered and well-mannered likes to stay indoors and is excellent in cuddling.

Exercise

It is reasonably an active dog and is for owners who do not go out for a walk daily. However, they must be taken out occasionally to dog parks to improve their mental and physical health. Too much outdoor exposure can make it difficult to clean their wrinkles, so it is better to keep them indoors.

Grooming

The American Ori Pei requires regular maintenance and grooming with proper bathing and shampoo. Wrinkles need cleaning regularly to avoid acne and infection. They have a tendency of shedding a moderate amount of hair throughout the year so brush them regularly with a soft-bristle brush. Clip their nails and clean their teeth twice or thrice a week.
