History

The Aussiedor is a hybrid of Australian Shepherd and the Labrador. Because it is a cross between two dogs, there is no detailed account of their origin.

Temperament & Personality

The Aussiedors is a loyal and gentle dog with their family and creates strong bonds with people they spend time with. They are possessive of their owners and feel neglected if left alone. They act as watchdogs and alert their family if they detect signs of danger. Because of its popularity as a herding dog, it mingles well with small children and may herd them too. But, it is an offspring of two intelligent dogs so learns quickly not to nip or chase the children.

Care

Exercise

The dog loves both mental and physical activities so its energy has to be channelized positively or it may become irritated. Daily walks of 30 to 60 minutes and playing sessions with various toys will be sufficient for the dog.

Grooming

To prevent matting, brush the dog’s coat weekly and more often when it sheds. Before brushing, use a conditioner (specially made for dogs) to detangle the hairs and then use a slicker brush for combing. A well maintained and clean dog requires only a few baths a year. Nails should be clipped only when long, while eyes and ears should be cleaned weekly checked to prevent infections.

Health Problems

Health issues common in Aussie lab mix pets are bone and joint disorders and eye complications such as collie eye anomaly, progressive retinal atrophy, and cataracts.

Training

Train the Aussiedor puppy when young and motivate it by using treats and praises to make the activities enjoyable. Include dancing or playing with toys to keep the dog in the right frame of mind. To socialize, the dog takes it to dog parks to play with other dogs and kids, make sure it is leashed. Teach the necessary obedience skills to the dog so that it holds back the herding behavior.

Feeding

The food intake of an Aussiedor depends on the level of activity in its daily life. Consider a good quality dry food or the commercial diet having a combination of vegetables and meat. An Aussiedor will need 3 to 4 cups of dry food daily.
