History

The Basschshund is a mix of Basset Hound and Dachshund. Since it is a new designer dog not much is documented about its history.

Temperament & Personality

This is a gentle and playful breed which can be both entertaining and comical. It is independent, strong and prefers to do things in its own ways so it can get a little frustrating. The Basschshund loves to cuddle and forms close bonds with its family members. Although it is easy to socialize, it always remains wary of strangers, which is why it’s a good watchdog.

Care

Exercise

The activity level of Basschshunds depends on which parent it leans towards. It can be slightly active, requiring just 30 minutes of walk per day. But it can also be very energetic and will want to go to the park for play sessions and socialize with other pets and kids. It is necessary to leash it because it loves to chase. This dog is suitable for apartment life because of its small size and moderate exercise needs.

Grooming

This dog is a low shedder, so its grooming needs aren’t high. People with allergies should stay away from it as it is not hypoallergenic. Use a hound glove or a rubber bristled paddle brush to brush it once or twice a week to keep the coat healthy. Bathe it only when required and always use a dog shampoo to protect the natural oil of the skin. Its ears are droopy which need regular care so clean them once a week. The eyes should also be checked and nails should be clipped only when long.

Health Problems

Genetic problems are a cause for concern for basset hound mix puppies. Back injuries can take place only by short jumps. Its ears are prone to infections and obesity can happen due to its love for food. Other common issues are bloat, hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, diabetes.

Training

Obedience training and socialization are essential to make sure it adjusts well to different people. Training, due to its stubborn and independent attitude, can be tricky. The key to training it correctly is using positive methods, maintain consistency and ensure it doesn’t get bored. House training will also need patience.

Feeding

Giving it 1½ to 2½ cups of high-quality dog food will be suitable for its nutritional requirements. Split the diet into two meals and make sure it is getting all the required vitamins for the energy needs. It loves to eat so prevent overeating as it might lead to obesity.
