History
Bassetoodles are also known as Bastoodles or Bassetpoo and the Basset doodle too. They are little breeds of dogs and are very much fun to be with. The Basset hound crossed with the Poodle breed and we got the Bassetoodle as a result. These fall into the category of Designer dogs or hybrid dogs and they became immensely popular since the last decade. The Bassetoodles were originated in the United States around sometime during the early 2000s. However, the parent breed Basset hound was developed around the 7th century in France and first appeared in the 19th century in the US. Also, the other parent breed of Poodle was originally a German breed. Selecting two dog breeds that have been mixed never before and creating a new and unique mixed breed of dog- this can be very much debatable in the world of dogs. Some are of the opinion that this may be quite harmful and moneymaking policy. This can be unpredictable both in case of their appearance and looks and occurrence of health problems too.
Temperament and Personality
The Bassetoodle is not only good looking and adorable but also turns to be excellent for a family. They are calm and enjoy being around humans. They are affectionate and dedicated to their owners and they get along with kids very well. Also, they are friendly to other pets. Bassetoodles thrives mainly on companionship and should not be left alone for long times. They are joyous and outgoing, but they can be mischievous and stubborn at times too. But this breed is very silly but fun to hang with. Bassetoodles are faithful to their masters and prove to be perfect choice for being pets. They are very sensitive to scent trails so you must keep an eye on them. Bassetoodles are playful, loyal and lovable pets, curious and also have a great sense of jovial tricks and mischief.
Exercise
The most exciting way to exercise for your Bassetoodle is letting him play. Give them the opportunity and see what wonders they can do as they love to play all the time. You may take him for a trip to a dog park every day where he can get the maximum playtime in a safe area. They would also love to accompany you on walks or jogging sessions. These are excellent ways for exercise. Also, for indoors you can provide them with fun toys and they will happily play for hours. However, short exercise sessions are preferable as the Bassetoodles do not have much energy level so would not like long sessions of activity. They can benefit a lot from regular exercise but if not that daily playtime with few walks will be enough for their good health. Some fetching and chasing games help them to burn off the extra energy.
Grooming
The Bassetoodle is however not a high maintenance breed of dog, but few things must be taken care of. They have moderate shedding so sometimes brushing in a week might be helpful. This is an excellent idea to help in the removal of loose hair by using a toothed comb. The Bassetoodle are more leaned to the Poodle breed, so they are more of hypoallergenic. Bathing may be given for a couple of times which may help them to keep the coat free from getting matted and tangles of the furs. Trimming is also needed around the eyes and anus on a regular basis. Nails must also be trimmed but be careful to cut them not very low as it may cause bleeding or irritation. You must find a professional groomer for your Bassetoodle. You must also wipe their ears on a weekly basis to get rid of an infection. Checking of the eyes must be done regularly. And teeth must be cleaned at least two to three times in a week.
Health problems
The Bassetoodle may be highly susceptible to diseases which have affected the parent breeds, as in the case of all other hybrid canine breeds of dogs. But there is no guarantee that your pet Bassetoodle will not come without ailments. Some of the conditions that commonly affect the parent dogs- the Basset hound and the Poodle include joint dysplasia, epilepsy, ear and eye infections, allergies, obesity and bloating. These may be inherited in the Bassetoodle. However, they are healthy breed as most hybrid dogs are in comparison with the purebred dogs. You must check once with the breeder before taking your Bassetoodle home to make sure of the ailment-free breed.
Training
The Bassetoodles are very willing to please their masters hence they will be very easy to train. However, you need to make yourself steady as they tend to be stubborn at times. So you need to be firm, consistent and kind to them while training. Make sure to use positive methods while handling them and use rewards and praises to get the best result. These dogs perform very well if they are given the opportunity in obedience training. You must begin the training for your Bassetoodle very early for better results and this will help them to become less destructive. Also, they will bark less if proper training can be given at younger stages. For more convenience, you may use food treats in the training methods. And make sure you avoid harsh tones and punishments to train the Bassetoodles.
Feeding
Make sure you choose a high-quality dog food which is a canine appropriate diet for your Bassetoodle. If you go for dry dog food for them, you may provide them with ¾ cups to one and a half cups of food daily. And this amount should be divided into two meals. Bassetoodles are very much prone to overeating and thus may be overweight. So you must be careful to feed them with the correct amount of food according to their size and activity skills. You can also opt for canned dog food and treats for your Bassetoodles. Make sure to adjust the quantity of the dry food depending on your Bassetoodle which will help to prevent weight gain which may result in obesity.
