History

Beago is a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Beagle. This breed is characterized by its strong muscular build. It has a broad skull followed by dark round eyes and a balanced muzzle. The black nose, muscular forequarters, droopy ears and a small tail are other physical characteristics. The dog has frequently participated in various dog sports like agility or competitive obedience. Other than that, it is a smart dog that is widely used for rescue and search operations or even detection of narcotics.

Temperament & Personality

Beagles are gentle, loving and well-behaved. They love children and enjoy the company of loved ones. However, they may have high prey drive to chase small pets so keep them leashed. They are keen to please their owner and make excellent companion dog. These dogs hate being alone and remain focused on a task until it is done. Some qualities inherited from Golden Retrievers are fetching the newspaper and barking when intruders come around.

Exercise

This crossbreed is very active, so it needs high energy activities on a regular basis. It enjoys outdoor activities, so take them to dog parks and let it explore. Playing sessions with various toys prevents the dog from getting bored.

Grooming

This dog has moderate grooming needs. Brush the coat regularly to remove debris and loose hair strands. Bathe it occasionally only with a dog shampoo. Check its long ears periodically for infections. Clipping the nails once a month and brushing its teeth twice a week will keep the dog in excellent condition.

Health Problems

Like many crossbreeds, Beagos are prone to inherited diseases. Common health issues are hypothyroidism, elbow dysplasia, cancer and heart diseases.

Training

This breed is highly trainable and learns quickly. Socialize them from puppyhood and enroll them in obedience training. Use rewards, like snacks, while training to motivate them. Owners can enroll their puppies in obedience classes which will be helpful for the pet.

Feeding

Provide commercial foods like cottage cheese, canned foods, and meat for adding flavor. Make sure the raw food or home cooked diet is providing sufficient nutrition. The daily amount of dry food required is 1½ to 2½ cups.
