History
Bosnian Coarse-haired Hound, initially known as Illyrian Hound named after the Slavic people that lived in the region where the breed developed. They came into existence in the years 1890 when the Italian gun dogs were bred with various indigenous dogs. Their breeders were the hunters who wanted an efficient scent hound, however a smaller version of contemporary hounds. Their ancestors may have helped in developing this breed. The FCI recognized them in 1965 and by UKC in 2006.
Temperament and Personality
The dog is intelligent, loyal spirited and hard working not just as a companion but also as a hunting dog. The dog has a friendly behavior which makes them a great family pet and their patient nature makes them do well with the children and other pets. Sometimes they are stubborn so they require firm training and can be louder than other dogs.
Exercise
It requires daily practice to control their aggressiveness, hyperactivity, and a few behavioral issues. They are suitable for long walks or a minimum activity of 45 minutes or a covered area to run.
Grooming
The dog requires regular brushing to avoid mats or tangles and bathe them when necessary or wipe clean them to maintain its fur. Keep a check on ear and eyes to prevent infection and clean its teeth regularly. Trim its nails and hair as and when required.
Health Problems
A little is known about the health problems of the breed, but it can be prone to some health issues like hip dysplasia, ear problems, eye infection, patellar luxation, cataracts, and bloating.
Training
As a hunting dog, it has the habit of getting distracted with an exciting scent, so it needs the training to be obedient and disciplined. Teach them to be mannered with the help of food and praise them for listening. Teach them to bark only when necessary because they can be destructive when they do not get enough exercise.
Feeding
Provide them with 1½ to 3 cups of good standard dry food split into two or three meals every day. It is essential to serve them food according to their size, age, and metabolism.
