History
Boxador is a Labrador retriever and a Boxer cross. Boxador is affectionate and intelligent, but it mostly inherits traits of its retriever parent.
Temperament & Personality
Boxador is a large dog, and without proper playing time, they can become destructive or develop odd behaviors. Hence they are not fit for a condo life. They are not excessive barkers and barks when needed. Boxador puppies are not very friendly with strangers but have a peaceful nature. It enjoys the company of its family and always eager to please their owner. With early socialization, they develop good behavior but get rude at times. Protecting their belongings is one of their natural intuitions. Left alone for longer duration can make them suffer from separation anxiety.
Exercise
They tend to eat and gain weight like its lab parent. Hence, vigorous activity for one hour every day is essential to keep them fit. Long walks or jogs twice a day with the sufficient amount of playtime in a fenced yard will provide them free space to play. It will reduce their mischievous activity. Keep them engaged in some or the other activity will keep them mentally active. Games like Frisbee hide and seek, etc. will keep them busy and mentally active.
Grooming
Their glossy coat does not require frequent washing, unless extremely filthy. Weekly brushing in shedding season will keep their coat dirt free and clean. Keep a check on their skin for any allergy.
Trim their nails when they overgrow. If they have tear stains, clean it with a damp, wet towel. Also brush their teeth twice a week to prevent oral problems and tartar development. Without proper ear cleaning, it can get infections. Therefore, clean their ears with Vet prescribed ear cleaner.
Health Problems
Being a healthy breed, it does not suffer from any physical problems. But due to its grains allergy, they might establish symptoms like diarrhea, dermatological irritation, foot licking, stomach licking, etc. Random veterinarian checks can keep them healthy and fit.
Training
Socialization from early days will make them learn dog manners and also mingle with people. Visiting parks or crowded places, they will not only able to meet new people but also make them well behaved. They are brilliant to learn commands quickly, but a consistent and firm trainer will be ideal to train them.
Keep the sessions varied and short to prevent boredom. Positive reinforcement will help them to pick up tricks and commands quickly.
Feeding
High-quality food divided into two halves is advisable. In homemade recipes, meat should be given priority, meat-like red meat, turkey or chicken do well. They are allergic to grains and should not be on the list. They like eating and can end up eating a lot more than they should and can suffer from obesity and other health problems. Hence it is advisable to monitor their food habits to keep them healthy.
