History

The Carpathian Sheepdogs are said to be descendants from the dogs belonging to the Mesopotamian region, about 9000 years ago. The Romanian peasants bred them for protecting their herd from predators. It is still a working dog and its looks and behavior haven’t changed much.

Temperament & Personality

The Carpathian Sheepdogs are known for their innate and unconditional loyalty to their flocks and the master. They are disciplined, territorial and eager to attract the attention of their loved ones. It mingles easily with children, but its guard dog characteristics make it wary around strangers. Their herding capabilities help them interact with other animals.

Exercise

Although they are comfortable in rural areas, the dog can also live in cities but needs a spacious room. It is very active and requires vigorous activities every day. Extended walks or jogging inside a big yard is necessary. Appropriately fenced is important to avoid distractions and ensure safety.

Grooming

Although their grooming requirements are low, brushing the skin once or twice a week will maintain its health. Bath the dog only when it is dirty to protect the natural oils of the skin. Clean the eyes and ears to avoid infections and clip the nails when they get long.

Health Problems

Carpathian Sheepdogs are prone to health issues like elbow and hip dysplasia, arthritis, bloating and abnormality in the skeleton. Ask for the health clearances of the dog’s parents before buying it to get an idea about possible complications.

Training

These dogs need a very firm and consistent leader who can act as their pack leader. Early socialization and obedience training are vital, so they interact with other animals and children. Teach them basic commands to control them and reduce the chances of destructive behavior.

Feeding

Give the Carpathian Sheepdog high-quality dry dog food. To prevent bloating, split the meal into smaller pieces. The amount of food it eats depends on the dog’s age and metabolism.
