History
The Catahoula Bulldog is said to have originated 100 years ago in the south of US. It is a hybrid between the American Bulldog and the Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog. They were developed because the ranchers wanted a breed that has endurance and agility of the Catahoula Dog with size, weight, and strength of the American Bulldog.
Temperament and Personality
Catahoula Bulldog is a laid back dog but can be alert and aggressive when necessary. It is always suspicious of intruders and will warn its owner if they sense any danger. Since they are devoted and protective towards their family members, they make excellent companion dog and are eager to please people. They are tolerant of children and can be compatible with other dogs if raised with them. It tends to express itself with the help of the ears.
Exercise
The dog requires 40-60 minutes of daily activity which includes daily walk, run, and fun play. Engage its mind in sports like fetching, catching the ball, agility, etc. to keep them fit mentally and physically.
Grooming
Catahoula puppies have short hair, it requires brushing once a week to avoid dirt. Bathe them 2-3 times a year, but excessive bathing can take away natural oils from the skin. Trim its nails regularly and keep its teeth clean to prevent infection.
Health Problems
Being a healthy breed, Catahoula mix pets do not suffer from any health issues but can inherit some problems from its parents. They include canine hip dysplasia, problems of the kidney, cherry eye, entropion, thyroid disorder, ectropion and bone cancer.
Training
It is an intelligent breed, so teaching will be a little more comfortable for the trainer. They require firm, consistent and a strong leader to train them to socialize and be well mannered. Take them to dog parks or events where they can meet up new people and other pets. To control its hunting instinct, begin with leash training while going out.
Feeding
Provide the catahoula leopard dog mix pets with four to five cups of high-quality dry dog food split into at least two meals every day.
