History

Lined with Egyptian breed of dogs known as Saluki, Chippiparai is an Indian breed dog.  Saluki was brought through the sea route to South India and was mated with the local dogs to create Chippiparai. The physical similarity with Saluki also proves this theory.

Temperament & Behavior

Chippiparai's temperament is same as the other Indian sighthounds. It is entirely peaceful and calm. It develops a strong bond with its family members. The dog tends to become a one-person dog if raised by a single person. The breed is quite reserved with its affection, although it is very loyal and devoted. The breed behaves very well with the children. For strangers, they are very suspicious and react very nervously.

Exercise

This breed needs a lot of activities without which they can get restless. Walking is a critical exercise, and the dog is allowed to run around without a leash in a large courtyard with enclosure.

Grooming

Chiipiparia has a short coat and requires less grooming. They shed minimum, but during their shedding regular brushing is advisable. Brushing once or twice every week is adequate. Bathe them when it is necessary. Additionally, check their oral health, wax collection, nails growth once a week.

Health Problems

They are healthy and sturdy and do not suffer from any common health problems.  However, they might catch a cold and are sensitive to anesthesia and allergies.

Training

Chippiparies need thorough training in obedience right from the time the owner brings it home, considering the independence and obstinacy nature. Never permit to walk the dog to step in front but make sure it follows the owner’s footsteps when going out. Socialization of puppy is necessary from time to time, as the dog has one man instinct. Socialization from an early age will allow it to mix properly with other pets.

Feeding

The breed is not a fussy eater. It needs 2 – 2 ½ cups of dry food.
