CHOW PEI

History

The Chow Pei is a designer breed made by crossing two Chinese dogs, the Chinese Shar-Pei and Chow Chow. Because they are hybrids, not much information about them is available.

Temperament & Personality

An intelligent and calm dog, the Chow Pei frequently acts detached. Some may say that it behaves in a stately manner. However, with proper socialization, it will act naturally with strangers and kids, though it is more amicable with other pets. The dog is best suited to just one owner.

Care

Exercise

This is a reasonably active breed and requires daily walks and some playing sessions. Trips to a dog park will be beneficial to allow it to mingle with other animals. An adequate amount of exercise is necessary for its mental and physical stimulation.

Grooming

The maintenance of the Chow Pei depends on the coat it inherits. Short coats are more manageable to groom while the longer ones need professional help. During the shedding season, the dog loses a lot of hair. Daily brushing and cleaning up afterward is necessary. Bathe it using a dog shampoo, only when it smells or becomes dirty. Brush its teeth twice or thrice every week and clean its eyes and ears to prevent infection. Cut its nails only when they are long, using the right tools.

Health Problems

Problems inherited from the parents include cancer, patellar luxation, skin problems, OCD, hip dysplasia, etc. It is advised to ask for the parents’ health clearances before buying these dogs.

Training

The Chow Pei’s independent behavior makes it difficult to train. New owners should take the animal to dog schools. A firm and consistent owner is vital who will act as the pack leader. Use positive methods like praising and offering treats.

Feeding

High-quality dry dog food should be fed daily to the animal. The amount is 2½-3 cups, but it may vary, depending on the Chow Pei’s size, age and metabolism.
