History

The Coton De Tulear is originated in Madagascar, which is situated in East Cost of Africa. The ancestor of this dog came by the way of sea and merchant ship. It belonged to the Bichon family and linked closely with Bichon terrier and Tenerife terrier. They caught the eye of the royal family around the 17th century, thus gaining the name as Royal Dog of Madagascar. The official recognition did not come until 1975, when the Federation Synologique internationally provided them with registration.

Temperament & Personality

They are intelligent and  possesses a playful nature, while recognized for their trust. It tries to the get the attention of the people while enjoying the company and sometimes acts like a crazy dog. On the other side, this breed is not demanding one and tends to be very easy going and adaptable to people. They are very friendly with kids and are more content to sleep near one's feet or in the lap. The gentle nature of the dog makes it a choice as a companion.

 

The Canton is slightly wary of strangers. It can show hesitation and may bark, but is not aggressive. Known to be a careful watcher and keen, they keep an eye on everything.

Exercise

Needing only moderate amount of training makes them active to run and play around the house and garden. However, it enjoys a little walk on a daily basis which can be much appreciated. These exercises can improve its sights and senses while keeping the mind stimulated.  Canine agility sports are suitable for this dog.

Grooming

This breed needs regular grooming and well being as a part of healthy living.  It should not be long enough so that the hair in chest or chest touch the ground. The length of the body hair is 4 to 6 inches, and it does not need much time for maintenance. Since the hair dries out quickly, it requires little brushing ie. only a few times in a week.

There is need for trimming of hairs , cutting of toe nails and shave off the hair over the eyes. It is necessary to groom the Coton coats at a very tender age so that they are used to combing and brushing as they grow up. Small and medium-sized brushes are used to remove dead hair. If using a mild pet shampoo, bathe this dog on a weekly basis or when it appears filthy.


Health Problems

There can be a development of terribly itchy skin with chronic allergies. Skin infection can occur from scratching. In the ear canal, there can be an infection due to the presence of excessive hair. Lousy hip joint and loose knee joint cause pain and lameness need surgery. Heart disease, eye infection, urinary stone, hypothyroidism and other dental diseases may also affect the dog.

Training

With positive reinforcement type training methods, Cotons tend to flourish. Given their gentle nature, the firm and disciplined training program will assist them to thrive better. Since this dog is a quick learner, hence concise communicative training can be more comfortable for them.

Feeding

Till six weeks,  milk is given while after that the owner can introduce solid foods like eggs, boiled vegetables, and bread. The adult ones need to be fed twice a day. The recommended options for an adult Coton includes lean meat, fruits, and boiled vegetables.
