History

The Coydog is a canid hybrid between a dog and the Coyote. The Teotihuacan people bred these dogs to achieve more resilient, strong, loyal and temperamental protector. Based on studies, it is said that these dogs existed for thousands of years and were brought by the Berlin Land Bridge 14000 years ago.

Interesting Facts

  1. Due to its inheritance from the coyote, they are not meant to be kept as domestic pets and they have been dangerous to members of the family and other pets.
  2. German shepherd coyote mix is not ideal due to their aggressiveness, they are not good learners and impossible to train.

Temperament and Personality

The behavior of the breed can vary from being shy, gentle, timid, and friendly to aggressive and even resort to biting. However, coy dog puppies are not a playful and outgoing dog, but early socialization with other pets and people can make them friendlier. They love every member of the family but prefer to create a unique bond with only one person. Its behavior typically depends on the breed of dog used for breeding. They do not bark like dogs, instead, they howl and can make a hissing sound like a cat.

Exercise

This coyote-dog mix is agile and highly energetic. They need to channelize their energy to avoid negative behavior issues in later life. Its exercise schedules should be 2-3 times a day which include brisk walking, jogging, and enough playtime to burn its energy. They are not suitable for apartment life but can be kept if a yard or an enclosed space is attached to it.

Grooming

Groom, the dog like other dogs of same hair type and size which include brushing twice or thrice a week, trimming its nails, checking of redness in ears and cleaning its teeth to avoid tooth decay.

Health Problems

Dogs of this size are prone to elbow dysplasia and hip dysplasia which results in arthritis or lameness. It can also inherit diseases from its parents.

Training

Train the dog during their puppy stage to familiarize with people and other pets. They tend to produce two behaviors (shyness and aggressiveness) at the same time, so teach them to socialize. They are not suitable for first-time owners and requires strict and consistent trainer with positive reinforcement.

Feeding

Their size and energy define the amount of food required to stay fit. They need high-quality dry dog food used for large sized dog and a lot of meat to complete their diet. They love bones so include it as a treat.

Just adopted a coydog pup from the Eastern plains of Colorado. She loves her new pack (me and my husband and our dogs) but bonded to me. She is quite active at 5:30 am and 9 pm. She eats anything and loves to tear up paper and boxes. Very sweet, very quiet and shys away from visitors and riding in the car. She is small and I believe her father was a plains coyote (they are small and skinny) She has a thick yellow undercoat and does not like to be covered by a blanket. She does not like to be in small rooms.
