History

Golden Rottie is a cross between two purebreds Rottweiler and Golden Retriever. It was developed in the late 1980s.  It was created keeping in mind a good companion with a gentle look.

Temperament & Personality

Golden Rottie is devoted and loyal to its family members, that is gentle, confident and affectionate. Despite its larger size, they are loving and gentle, they also go well with kids and other pets in the house with proper socialization. Due to its protective nature, it never fails to bark and warn its owner about any suspicious activity. They are excessive barkers and needs proper training methods to minimize this trait. This breed thrives on its family companionship and tries to help its family members with some or the other activity. Like its Golden Retriever parent, it also suffers from separation anxiety and might develop odd behaviors if left alone for longer durations. These puppies are an ideal choice for first-time owners and so well in a house with a yard.

Exercise

They are an ideal partner for indoor games, but they cannot be confined inside the house for the entire day. To meet its serious exercise requirements, it needs to run, walk or jog for about 1-2 hours, at one time or divided into two sessions. Ideal games to provide them with stimulation are frisbee, agility training, ball catching or rolling etc. They can pick up odd behaviors if they don’t get adequate exercise. Owners can take them to Dog’s Park where they can meet new friends or move around freely.

Grooming

Their coat can vary between long hair to short hair, depending upon the coat they inherit from their parents. Brush them 3-4 times a week to keep their coat tangle and mat free. Also, during their shedding season, regular brushing is advisable to clean their loose furs. Bathe them occasionally with a vet prescribed shampoo to maintain the oil balance of their coat. Ensure their inner ear is dry after bathing or after their favorite activity swimming, as they have folded ears which can become a breeding ground for infections and can result in irresistible pain.

They tend to grow nails faster which can crack if not appropriately trimmed and hinder regular activities like walking, run, etc. However, cutting them twice a month will serve the purpose. Clean their ears with Vet prescribed ear solution. Also, brush their teeth twice a week to avoid development of tartar and oral problems.

Crate training is essential, to prevent their loneliness. Owners can train them on their own or take help from the professional trainer. Their big size can develop unpleasant occurrences, hence leash training is must for this breed.

Feeding

Two to three cups of dry dog food specially made for the larger breed or homemade foods with veggies, lamb, meat that are rich in vitamins & minerals will suffice its energy requirements. However, it is essential to visit a dietician or a vet before choosing a food. But it is advisable to plan a diet depending upon the dog’s size, age, activity level and metabolism. It is advisable to offer them small meals multiple times a day and prevent heavy exercises to minimize the risk. If they gain weight, reduce table scraps, treats, etc.
