History

A cross of the Golden Retriever and the Saint Bernard, the Golden Saint is popular as a friendly and loving dog. Because it is a crossbreed, information about its origin is unavailable.

Temperament & Personality

Golden Saints are excellent family dogs. They are willing to please their owner and would do anything to grab their attention. The breed is amicable with children also, but exposing them to small ones requires supervision. Blending with other animals is not a problem if socialization skills are correctly taught. Any signs of danger will trigger the territorial instincts in the dog, and it will protect its family with courage.

Care

Exercise

Not necessarily an active breed, the Saints require moderate activities. Due to heat exhaustion, jogging during summers is not good for them. It’s better for them to stay indoors and be engaged in some other activity. Play sessions and daily walks will be sufficient for them.

Grooming

Use a pin brush to brush the dog’s coat in case of mats. To detangle, use a unique solution and then comb. Prevent the skin from becoming dry by bathing it frequently. Maintain its oral, nail and ear hygiene by taking it to a professional groomer.

Health Problems

Significant issues of this breed include epilepsy, cataracts, heart conditions, allergies, blood disorders and bloating.

Training

Begin the process right from puppyhood to curb it stubbornness. Teach them basic socialization and obedience skills to make them well-behaved. Visit dog parks with it so that it gets a chance to mingle with other animals and kids. Let it listen to sounds and motivate it to do exciting activities. Teach it the water fetch trick as it will provide both mental and physical stimulation.

Feeding

Four to size cups of good quality dog food will provide the dog vital nutrients. The amount of food depends on its size, age, and metabolism.
