History
Belonging to the Bichon or Barbichon group, the Havanese is originated in the Mediterranean region in the ancient time. To maintain trade relationships, Spanish traders gifted such dogs to Cuban girls. As adorable pets, the wealthy Cuban families pampered these little dogs. The breed was also referred to as Habaneros or White Cubans, once introduced to Europe. As a pet of the influential people and favorite performing dogs, they gained the attention of the fancy people.
Temperament And Personality
Known as responsive and gentle, Havanese is natural companion dogs. With children, they are very excellent, and they become attached to the family. The breed is very sociable, playful and affectionate with a high degree of intelligence. This breed gets along with others dogs, pets, and cats in a perfect way. The dog has an excellent observation power, and it watches what others are doing. It will not listen to somebody if it senses that the person is stronger mind than its master. Some of them bark very often and needs proper socialization. In spite of the size, this breed does not show cowardice.
Exercise
Exercise needs are moderate for the Havanese. With the owner in the backyard, it will benefit from a brisk walk or fun playtime. It is happier when someone is with them. If it romp around the house, there is enough exercise. No over exercise is the need at any age. It is time to home if the dog is struggling and panting. For both house and apartment, it is the best dog.
Grooming
To keep away the tangles and mat, the soft, long and silky coat needs grooming. To reduce the grooming time, the pet owners often trim the clip the coat to a little trim. Bathing is necessary on an occasional basis. To avoid tear stain of the lighter colored hair in the area, the corners of the eye should be gently cleaned on a daily basis. To remove accumulated debris or remove excess wax, checking of ears is often required and with a paper towel or moisturized gauge, wipe out the inside of the ear flap.
Health
The Havanese has potential health problems, just like other dogs. It includes luxating patellas; leg calve perthes disease, deafness, eye problems, heart problems and hypothyroidism. The degradation of the head of the femur occurs due to less blood supply to the region. When the knee pops out of the normal position, the patellar luxation occurs and can range from mild to severe.
Training
The breed training done by using positive methods, since it is eager to please and highly intelligent. Since they are sensitive breeds, hence care is the necessity at the time of training. Scolding is big no during this procedure. Socialization at an early age is critical for this dog. Exposure of the dog to new people and places are significant. The disclosure needs to be decisive and not intimidating. Patient and gentle training provides terrific results for the companion dog.
Feeding
High-quality dog food is appropriate for the Havanese. The weight level and calorie consumption needed checking since they put on little weight. Cooked meals and bones are avoidable since they have high-fat content.
