History

The Irish Wolfhound got its name due to its skill in hunting elks and wolves. Mostly used for guarding and hunting tasks, it is said that they came to Ireland more than 5000 BC ago.

Initially, the dog was employed for pulling soldiers off chariots and horsebacks
In the 1800s, to save the breed from extinction, Captain George Augustus mixed the Irish Wolfhound with other breeds like Deerhounds, Great Danes, and Mastiffs
Oliver Cromwell also played his part in protecting the breed by refusing the export of this dog from Ireland
Blue-colored variety of this dog was rare and became illegal to own

Temperament & Personality

Irish Wolfhound puppies are quite patient and intelligent, even though they belong to the category of hounds. They are close to their family and are amicable even with strangers. It tries to please its owner, which establishes that they are more than just watch dogs. Their aggressiveness is triggered only when it gets irritated. It tends to protect both people and their belongings.

Exercise

Those living in apartments should not buy this dog as it needs ample space. Walking and light play sessions will give the necessary stimulation. Refrain from giving it vigorous exercises to the puppy as it will be detrimental to its health.

Grooming

These moderate shedders need regular brushing to protect the natural oils on the skin. Plucking the coat 1-2 times a year will help in getting rid of dead hairs. Use the right tools to clip its long nails. Clean the ears and eyes to prevent infection.

Health Problems

Major concerns include gastric torsion, cardiomyopathy, bloating, bone cancer and hip dysplasia.

Training

Hunting and protecting instincts are innate in these hounds. Thanks to its cleverness, picking up tricks is easy for them. A large-sized fenced yard will be an added advantage as the dog can run without a leash for some time. Teach it basic obedience and socialization skills using positive methods like praises and treats.

Feeding

The diet of any other hound is suitable for the Irish Wolfhound. A good choice would be 4-8 cups of high-quality dog food split into two meals. The amount of food can vary accordingly as per the size, age, and metabolism of the animal.
