History

Jack Rat Terrier, also known as Jersey Terrier has been developed by crossing the Jack Russell and Rat Terrier. As it belongs to the hunting family, it possesses high energy, intelligence, and deftness of its parents. The crossbreed varies from toy to medium size having the appearance of both Rat Terrier and Jack Russell Terrier. The best dog with small features and high attitude.

Temperament & Personality

The breed has a very striking personality with alert inclination, they are adventurous and reflect high energy level during any action.Toy rat terrier is not only ideal as a working dog but is very affectionate if brought up in the family. It gets acquainted with children whom they recognize since puppyhood, while an adult requires supervision. Jersey Terrier is a great watchdog and not very friendly with an unknown person.

Exercise

Jack Rat Terrier comes from energetic parents, hence will require plenty of activity every day. An hour of exercising followed by long walks and training will be adequate for the dog. Proper activity should be provided to avoid boredom which can later lead to behavioral problems.

Grooming

The rat terrier jack russell mix sheds in a moderate climate, so trimming and clipping in summer months is necessary. Pin brushes and slicker brushes are best for this breed. Bathing regularly is not essential and cleaning is crucial when the dog is filthy. Regular cleaning can lead to various problems like dry skin and other skin problems. Brush them twice or thrice a week along with cleaning the ear once in a week and clipping nails when they are too long.

Health Problems

The primary concern for this breed includes Patellar Luxation, Deafness, Cardiomyopathy and Patent Ductus Arteriosus. Occasional tests recommended include DNA test for VWD Thyroid tests, Physical Eye Examinations, Joint movement around the hip and the Heart rate tests.

Training

Jersey Terrier is stubborn and requires a patient trainer to train them. Socialization with children and other pets are crucial for these puppies and it will help to lower the aggression towards strangers and other pets.

Feeding

They require protein-rich diet due to the energetic nature and nutritious vegetables cooked at home cooked are preferable. Half cups of dry dog food is also recommended on a daily basis.
