History

The word Karakachan is derived from the word ‘Karakchans,’ the nomadic shepherd of the Balkan region. These dogs are taken into account as the descendants of the canine breed of Iran and Afghanistan. In earlier times, they were inferred as an excellent guard dog, who could fight with wolves and bears. In the Second World War, the Bulgarian Army used this breed, but in the year 1957 this breed lost its importance and was killed.

Interesting Fact

  1. The word Karakachan is taken from the Turkish words ‘kara’ and ‘kacan’ which means ‘the black one got away.’

Temperament and Personality

This breed is devotional and loyal towards their owners and can even go to any limit to protects its people. They also have a hunting and good hearing instinct which makes them excellent guard dogs as well. However, it is not aggressive while guarding livestock, but shows highly reserved behavior if they face the stranger. They are even superior in barking if they watch something unfamiliar near the flock. These pets require socialization at a very early age to be compatible with small children and other pet in the house.

Care

Exercise

Since they are highly energetic dogs, they require enough amount of activity to satisfy their needs. If they are not set as guarding livestock, take them for jogs or long walks or give particular kind of work to keep them fit mentally and physically.

Grooming

The coat of the dog requires two to three times of brushing for proper maintenance. Bathe them when they get dirty and keep a check of its ears to prevent infection. Also, trim its nails and clean its teeth frequently.

Health Problems

No such problem is detected in this breed until this time.

Training

They require firm and consistent trainer who can control its independent nature and positively channelize its intelligence. The harsh and rough tone might make them destructive, so use positive techniques like giving treats and praises. Teach them to obey commands and prevent undesired incidents. When they are about 15 weeks, train them to walk with a leash when they go outside.

Feeding

Being a big sized dog, it requires four to five cups high-quality dry dog food split into two or three times every day. Also, maintain its diet according to its size and metabolism and balance the amount of protein, carbohydrate, and nutrition.
