History

In the early 1990s, the breeding of King Shepherd began on the East Coast of USA by two breeders David Turkheimer and Shelly Watts Cross. This breed falls in the designer breed category which was developed by crossing, Shiloh Shepherd, German Shepherd, Alaskan Malamute and Great Pyrenees. They have a sturdy and muscular built along with erect ears and a well-proportioned head. The eyes are almond shaped while the cheeks are deep and curved. Other than that it has a broad chest and a curly tail that is thick and hairy.

Temperament & Personality

As a working dog, it is intelligent enough to do tasks which requires obedience, courage, and strength. They are loyal and are always ready to please their masters. They are aloof in the first instance but do not show any aggression making them a perfect guard dog. This breed is an ideal playmate for the kids and trustworthy companion for the caregiver. With other pets, it creates a good rapport if brought up with other pets since puppy days.

Exercise

King Shepherd needs rigorous outdoor exercises on a regular basis. For twice a day, it needs brisk jog and walks along with an additional form of exercise. To ensure its maintenance of muscles, the breed usually receives enough training. The owner ensures that it gets a daily dose of physical activity if there is urban home. Without exercise, the dog can become destructive, restless and stubborn.

Grooming

Frequent grooming is the demand, as the breed has a course or smooth coat. There will be considerable shedding, irrespective of the type of the coat. Brushing every three to four days for five to ten minutes is necessary to keep the coat free of knots. When mandatory, bathe the dog. Based on the size of the hair, the effort and time of grooming vary. Longer grooming time is required for longer hair coats.

Health Problems

Long-term studies regarding health problems are underway, and since this is a relatively new breed, hence there is a tiny health problem. But there are still few health problems, which they inherit from the parents.  They are bloating, hypothyroidism, joint dysplasia, and eye problems. They also suffer from osteoarthritis.

Training

Provided the trainer knows the basic, the breed is comfortable to train due to its intelligence. Training from the puppy hood help the dog to get socialized in a better form so that they don’t behave incorrectly. Even protection training is part of the preparation for this dog. To keep the activity levels high in mind, leash training is essential.

Feeding

To keep the dog in good shape, 3 to 4 cups of high-quality dry food is a must. In addition to dog food, homemade diet or even raw food can be provided.
