Kooikerhondje is a spaniel Dutch breed, good-natured and a perfect family companion. It was developed as a working dog with the purpose to lure ducks into traps for hunting. It remains a hunting dog and also popular at dog sports. A black tip on its long ears is referred as earrings. This dog is getting popular in the countries like Canada, Scandinavia, and the US.

Temperament & Personality

Kooikerjhondse is a sensitive, intelligent and alert breed which makes it a good family pet. It adapts easily to the environment it lives. This dog likes quiet environment and gets irritated with loud noises. Its knack for swimming and splashing makes him sporty. Dutch Decoy Dogs stay reserved to strangers until they get properly acquainted with them. They bark to acquire the attention of people and also at people who threaten them or seem wrong. These characteristics also make them an excellent watchdog.

Exercise

Kooikerjhonde does not require heavy exercise and activities may include backyard playing, small walks several times a day along with some indoor activities. Teaching new tricks or chasing a ball can also be an excellent option to expend energy. Outdoor activities like swimming, hiking, retrieving balls and flying discs are also enjoyable activities for them.

Grooming

Kooikerhondje needs good brushing every week and often during the shedding season. The coat of this breed should be kept clean, though it is naturally waterproof and remains clean. Bathing this dog regularly is not necessary as it can deplete the coat’s dirt-repelling powers.

Health Problems

Dutch Decoy Dogs are healthy dogs, there can be only few who face health challenges in their lives.

Training

It is an intelligent and sensitive dog. A patient trainer can control its aggression, but harshness during training can hurt the relationship with their masters. They mostly do well when treated with praises and rewards. New training methods are the best way to keep them energetic as they get deadhead very easily.

Feeding

Nederlandse Kooikerjhonde comes under a medium breed and has unique digestive needs through various phases of their lives. Feeding the dog is an entirely an individual choice, but a veterinarian can be the best one to decide repetition of meals to make the dog healthy.
