History

Origin of the Maltipom is unknown as the hybrid dogs have been around from many years, but it is believed that it originated in the USA. As a designer dog, it does not have any documented history or has set any standards. Maltipom puppy is a mix of 50/50 Pomeranian and a Maltese (both purebred), though there may be cases where the puppy has more/less than 50 percent of each parent breed. Hence, it can lead towards either of its parents.

It is a tiny dog, and as a result of the cross, it is available in a variety of shades and patches depending entirely upon the dominating parent's genes. Maltipom has inherited it's high energy and long silky coat from its parents, the Maltese and the Pomeranian. It is a temperate climate dog and does not like too hot or too cold temperatures.

Temperament & Personality

Maltipom puppies are gentle and affectionate, they can do anything to please its master and the family. It is also alert and capable of sounding the alarm if it finds anything suspicious inside its territory. This dog goes well with children, but keep away the younger children who might not know how to reach out to dogs. These dogs are also distrustful of strangers and bark continuously until the owners ask them to stop. They expect attention from its owners and do not like to be left alone. With proper socialization training, these puppies are well behaved, sociable and can mix well with other pets and dogs in the family. They can become territorial if training is not provided on time.

Exercise

They are an active breed and to keep up with the energy level, it requires 30 minutes walk or 30 minutes jogging every day. Since they are apartment dogs, they can play various games indoors and remain busy in domestic activities. They need supervision or their master to play with them as they can’t stay alone for a more extended period. They suffer from anxiety and can develop odd behaviors like chewing, barking and digging.

Grooming

This breed has a beautiful coat which requires regular brushing and combing to maintain the shine. Gentle brush like pin brush or comb will be helpful to remove the knots and dirt from the coat. These dogs do not require regular bathing and it can be bathed when its necessary. A light water spray once a week will help the dog to maintain its coat.

Straining might develop on the white colored dogs but wiping their eyes with pet wipe will help to clean the stain. They possess long hairs and might snare dirt and debris in ears. Ear checking every week will help to clear the wax formation and nails will need clipping when they overgrow.

Health Problems

Maltipom puppies are healthy, but with age, they can suffer from Patent Ductus Arteriosis (PDA). Other minor concerns include Patellar Luxation, Cataracts, Hypothyroidism, Portosystemic Shunt, Progressive Retinal Atrophy.

Occasional tests should include Eye Examination, Radiographs, Thyroid Testing, etc. Regular veterinarian checkups will also help the dog to stay healthy.

Training

Pomanese puppies are very intelligent and respond well to training. Though, this breed tends to become dominant and can develop “small dog syndrome” like other small breed dogs. Hence, only a firm and steady trainer can train this dog. In order to prevent this dog from developing problematic behaviors, socialization training should be started at a very early age.

Feeding

Maltipom is a small dog and requires a nutritious diet that is developed for small breed dogs. Formulas should be specially made to meet the high energy requirements.
