History

The Norwegian Buhund is a purebred from Norway. This breed belongs to the group called the Splitz type.  They have a square shaped body with a tail rolled up to its back. The head is wedge-shaped with a black nose. They are often compared with the Norwegian elkhound and the Norwegian Lundehound.

Temperament & Personality

The Norsk Buhund is an active breed who is known to be extremely lovable and loves the company of children. Keeping in mind their hunting instincts, close supervision is needed when they are around small children.

They easily build a close bond with the entire family but may become aloof and wary upon the arrival of a stranger. This breed is ideal for those people who can bear its extremely active lifestyle.

Care

Exercise

They don’t get tired easily and require extensive exercises on a daily basis. They would love a short distance run or a game of Frisbee. However, it will become destructive if kept still at a single place for a prolonged period. Without proper exercise, they may suffer from the risk of obesity. The owner can also train the dog in high-energy dog sports.

Grooming

The Buhund has a short to medium length coat that does not matt easily. Weekly brushing will be fine with this breed. During the shedding season, daily brushing is recommended. The teeth should be cleaned once a week to have good oral hygiene. Nails should be trimmed occasionally as they have a nipping habit.

Health Problems

Health issues such as Pulverulent nuclear cataracts, Epilepsy, and skin allergies have been recorded. This breed has a high chances of getting hip dysplasia.

Training

The Buhund is an intelligent breed with a strong desire to learn new things. This is a mouthy breed, which means during their puppy stage, they have a habit of nipping and play-biting the humans which should be controlled in their puppy days. This breed also has a preying tendency and often chases animals like cats, squirrels, and even cars. Obedience training is a must for this breed.

Feeding

A high-quality dry kibble diet is recommended for the Buhunds. A dog food formulated especially for the active breeds is highly recommended for this breed. The diet should be selected after consulting a proper Veterinarian.
