History

The Old Danish Pointers came into existence in the year 1710 when a local breeder of Denmark mated Domestic field dogs with nomad dog races for eight generations. Some experts believe that these Danish pointers have ancestry which goes back to the breed called the St. Hubert Hound.

Interesting Facts

  1. Male Danish Pointers are more powerful and robust than the female Pointers.

Temperament & Personality

The Danish pointer is a reticent dog with a blend of inflexibility and bravery. They are incredibly devoted and loyal to their owner. Being attentive and playful, these dogs love the company of children and make an excellent pet for an active family or a dynamic single. They mostly remain calm indoors but are highly-animated and energetic on the field. They are also a great hunting dog and are used to retrieve gallinaceous birds. These Pointing dogs socialize well with other pets.

Exercise

As they have an active lifestyle, the pointers need at least one hour of activity on a daily basis. The dog will love a game of frisbee or any other agility sport. A long run or a vigorous walk will keep the dog in good health. However, without proper activities, the dog will become destructive and aggressive.

Grooming

Brushing the coat with a hound mitt and rubbing with a chamois will keep its coat gleam. The owner should clean the coat on a regular basis to keep it mat-free. Trimming the nails once a week will prevent them from growing too long.

Health Problems

Some dogs may get diseases like the hip dysplasia from their parents. They may also suffer from Muscle fatigue, which will decline their muscle force. The owner can have a DNA test for this disease. Some minor issues include Entropion, Distichiasis, and Ectropion.

Training

Training is quite easy as they smart and intelligent. Being an excellent gundog, the owner can teach them to swim or retrieve birds. The owner should socialize the pet with other dogs from its puppy stage.

Feeding

A nutrient rich diet of meat, fish, vegetables, etc. combined with high-quality dog food is enough on a daily basis. They need a serving of 3-4 cups of meal per day.
