History

Pembroke Sheltie is a result of a cross between Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Shetland sheepdog. This hybrid mix makes an excellent pet being a combination of Corgie and Sheltie. It has inherited tenderness, mellowness and the regal attitude from its parents and makes one of the caring parts of the family.

Temperament & Personality

The dog is a tremendous furry family member and makes an ideal pet for the first time pet owners. They are not very intelligent but are brave, loyal and lively. It is not a perfect watchdog and does not warn its master of an intruder, but it doesn’t hesitate to protect its family in a hard situation. Pembroke Sheltie tends to chase people and cars. This herding instinct is inherited from its parents and depending upon the inheritance, few dogs can be super active while few can develop a shy nature.

Appropriate training at an early age will make it comfortable with kids and other animals. Its inherited hunting instincts makes it essential to keep it strapped every time it is outside to ensure the safety of the dog and the owner. It comfortably fits into any type of family and home setting, provided it gets appropriate exercise. It has a double coat and adapts well in cold temperatures and moderately in temperate climates, additional care is required in hotter climatic conditions.

Exercise

Pembroke Sheltie is an active canine and will require substantial activity A long walk or jog and enough play time in a fenced yard in a dogs park will be adequate. Though, its herding instinct keeps it moving and interested which adds to its activity regime. Apart from physical exercise, it also requires mental practice, puzzle games or playtime with the owner will keep the dog happy and charged. Adequate activity will keep the dog’s odd behavior at bay. Additionally, if the puppy is shy and slow, it will not require hard activities and playtime in a park or a yard will keep it healthy.

Grooming

It is a minimal shedder and does not require heavy maintenance. Brushing its coat twice a week will keep it clean and dirt free. Bathing once in two months is suitable as excess bathing will wash off the essential oils from its coat. Ear cleaning once a week with approved canine–ear wash solution is recommended to prevent painful ear infections. Toenails will require clipping when they overgrow and brushing the teeth twice a week will avoid tartar development and tooth decay. This dog breed does not possess drooling and bad odor.

Positive training methods like praises, hugs, and snacks will let the dog learn at a faster rate.
