History
Pomerat is a cross between a Rat terrier and a Pomeranian. These small dogs are very active and are known for their high energy and playfulness. They have a little face, dark eyes and semi-erect ears. Their coats differ from one puppy to other and it relies upon the inheritance shorter coat of Pomeranian or varieties of the Rat Terrier. They are caring dogs which go best with a family who has older children.
Temperament & Personality
Pomerat’s friendly personality helps to mingle easily with adults, it is a loving as well as an energetic dog that participates in all kinds of activities. These dogs are not recommended for very young kids as they can be hurt very quickly and the dogs can snap if they are handled roughly. It inherits this lively nature from its rat terrier parents. The breed likes the company of their owners and if left alone for too long can develop bad behaviors and start yapping. They are suitable for the first time owners and from puppyhood, they are suspicious of strangers and alert its family by barking if they see an unknown face making them an ideal watchdogs.
Exercise
These dogs are very energetic especially if they inherit the features of a Terrier. Regular walks, playtime in a fenced yard or indoors with toys will be adequate. These puppies like to play different games, chase balls or unique games with the owner. Few dogs are prone to digging and try to escape, so plenty of exercises is the best solution to keep them on track. Adequate training will keep the dog mentally and physically healthy. They adapt quickly to a condo life if they get the desired company. They also don’t do well in extreme conditions, so heavy exercising in winter will keep them warm and minimum exercise or no activity in summer season will make them comfortable.
Grooming
Pomerat dogs shed minimal and require low maintenance. If the puppy inherits the long hair of the Pomeranian, it wouldn’t need much grooming. Brushing its coat twice a week will keep it clean and dirt free. It will also keep the skin healthy and prevent matting. Short haired varieties, the puppies which inherit short hair of Terrier are even more comfortable to groom with weekly brushing. Bathing them frequently is necessary with a dog shampoo, as normal shampoo can wash away their essential oils. Tooth brushing twice or thrice a week will help it keep up with its oral health. Toenails will require clipping when they overgrow, and ears will need weekly cleaning to avoid ear infection.

Training
Pomerat’s are easy to train dogs but require a confident owner. These dogs tend to develop a small dog syndrome, therefore exposing them to various smells or other dogs will help them socialize with other dogs and prevent the possibility of dog aggression. In order to make the dog tolerant of humans, regular visits to public places like bus stations, dog park, food stores, malls, stores, etc. will help them socialize, and they will not bark without any reason. Pomerat is a little yet playful creature and might get hurt very quickly while playing. Training them to walk or run on uneven surfaces gradually will reduce the chances of getting injured. Teaching them how to use the staircase will not only make them learn but at the same time, will also serve as a perfect foot exercise.
Feeding
Homemade food can be given to the dog, but provide adequate nutrition on a daily basis. 1 cup of commercial food made for small sized dogs with high activity levels can also be given every day. The meals should be divided into two to three times and will keep the digestive tract in order.
