The designer pug poodle mix dog Pugapoo is perfect for those preferring the pug’s small size coupled with the Poodle’s temperament. Like all other designer mix breeds, it is the result of crossing a pug with a poodle- both of which are purebreds.

The Pugapoo you adopt might have a slightly different size, personality, and temperament based on its breeding but will typically demonstrate the positive qualities of its parents. For instance, it will most likely grow up to be a playful, intelligent, and caring dog bonding well with your family and amenable to training.

History

This Pug and Poodle Mix has become all the rage only in the last 2-3 decades. Breeders began focusing on developing a new-fangled designer breed by crossbreeding a Pug with a Poodle.

There’s no written record of when and where the Pugapoo was created, and to date, no kennel or breeder has laid claim to the same. However, what we do know is that the Pug native to China was transported to Europe in the 1500s while the Poodle originated as a German water dog earlier than the 15th cent.

These dogs have small round eyes, triangular muzzle and a pair of hanging ears. They have robust and muscular legs, and the forelimbs are straight while the hind limbs are angular. The coat differs in texture, and the fur can be anything between curly to very curly.

Temperament & Personality

Pugapoos very much like their parents, Poodle and Pug, come across as very delightful, affectionate, friendly, bright, and gregarious dogs. The dog looks so charming and cute that you can’t help but fall in love with the dog. Several Pugapoo breeders have reported that the dog is smarter than a Pug and also bonds quickly with its master’s family.

In most cases they are lively, but some may have an aggressive nature. In general, these dogs are considered to be very affectionate, kind and loyal to their owners. Most of the Pugapoos bark less but some can be a barker if they inherit the Poodle’s side. Nevertheless, this breed tends to bark at the drop of a hat, and therefore you should start socializing the dog early on. They are naturally playful and get along well with small kids and other small pets.

They are also an excellent watchdogs as they will surely bark and alert the owner if there is an intruder in the house. This breed will start growling if left alone for a prolonged period. Pugapoos always prefers company, the canine can get nasty and irritating if left alone. It could start barking, scratching, digging or chewing aggressively if the pet is left untended or unattended for long. Being a very intelligent, sharp, and bright dog, the Pugapoo is very receptive to obedience and socialization training.

Care

Exercise

The Pugapoos won’t need massive activities on a daily basis. Instead, they will stay in motion throughout the entire day. Since this is an indoor breed, small play sessions with other dogs or with small children will keep it healthy. Taking your Pugapoo out for a short walk for 45-60 minutes twice a day lets the dog stay in perfect shape, physically and mentally.

Being a small dog, the animal is prone to get tired earlier than you may prefer. It is in his or her element when playing around or socializing with your children and other family members.

Grooming

Grooming entirely depends on the coat type. Brushing them once in a week will keep the fur clean and occasional trimming will keep their hair short. Frequent bathing and excess usage of water will harm their coat texture.

The type of coat your Pugapoo has will determine the grooming requirements of the dog. Though the frizzy coat of the dog does not shed heavily, you’d still need to groom the pet once every 4-5 weeks. Initially, you’ll have to hire a professional groomer to take care of the dog’s coat but once you learn to clip, you can groom yourself.

If you don’t clip the Pugapoo’s curly coat the fleece will become knotty and matted which could lead to sore skin infections. Trim his nails every two weeks, and use toothpaste recommended by your vet for brushing his teeth once in a while. At the same time, clean the ears of the Pugapoo occasionally using a vet-approved cleaning solution.

Health Problems

The owner should keep an eye on general health issues like hip dysplasia, Eye, and breathing problems, Allergies, and some neurological problems like the Pug dog Encephalitis, Thyroid, Hormonal disorders, etc. Other major concerns are Sebaceous Adenitis, Addison's disease, Cushing’s syndrome, Gastric dilation volvulus. Occasional diagnosis might be needed for Brachycephalic syndrome.

Largely healthy, it is at a lesser risk of developing health issues compared to purebreds. This is so because Pugapoos are bred and reared from a larger gene pool in comparison to thoroughbreds. Nevertheless, your Pugapoo is not completely immune to health problems and may develop hip dysplasia, eye problems, allergies, and breathing issues.

It may be quite difficult to detect congenital or inherited conditions in a Pugapoo puppies implying that the dog is always at risk of contracting a disease. Therefore you must always adopt a pup from a certified Pugapoo breeder who can produce not only the pup’s health certificate but also of his parents.

Training

Training should start as early as in the 16th week since their birth with things like socialization and positive reinforcement techniques like food rewards and praises. Pugapoo puppies always want to please their owner and thus makes an excellent subject for a trainer.

The Pugapoo will respond to your commands and directions fairly well thanks to the canine’s intelligence and mild temperament. Additionally being a very smart and amiable dog, the Pugapoo will warm up to children and senior people sooner than later. Also, Pugapoos can adapt quickly to new places and are quite receptive to strangers.

You should start training your dog while it’s still a pup if you want the dog to grow up well-behaved. On the other hand, positive reinforcements like praising him or offering him a treat (when the dog obeys your command) will make the training more effective.

Feeding

Pugapoo puppies need a healthy diet on a daily basis meant for their size and body type. Always consult a proper Vet before deciding on the dog food.

It does not bear emphasis that you should offer the Pugapoo a quality dog food specially created for small breeds. An adult Pugapoo can manage perfectly well with approximately a cup of quality dog food like the ‘Purina Pro Plan Small Breed Shredded Form’. However, refrain from overfeeding the Pugapoo as the dog is vulnerable to obesity putting him at high risk of developing diabetes.

The activity level, size, and age of your dog will determine the quantity of food you should offer.
