History

Puli was brought thousand years ago to Europe by Magyars, the Asian nomads who presented Vizsla to the West. This breed is thought to have an Asiatic origin, and it descended from Tibetan Terrier years back. Puli herded large sheep flocks on the plains as the color and size were important while determining the job. Their herding instinct is strong and tries to her anything like, other pets, birds, toddlers, etc. They are not only herding animals, but also prove to be an active house pet. They lost their popularity after a second world war and were introduced to the US government in 1935 and 1936 it got official recognition by American Kennel Club (AKC).

Temperament & Personality

Puli is an active, intelligent, agile and curious dog. They change their directions easily and move in quick steps. They adapt quickly to a condo life and are very caring for their owners. But they gradually mix with unknown people like some guests or friends of its owners. They have hunting and chasing instinct, due to which the owners should protect other pets in the family.

Exercise

It is an active dog and requires mental and physical training. If they do not get the adequate exercise, they might develop destructive behaviors. One can take them for long walks twice a day. Visit dog parks or social places like bus stops and busy streets will not only provide mental stimulation but also socialize them. They also excel in games like hiking, field work, biking, etc. A house with a yard will be ideal for this pet as they keep themselves busy playing and running. However, it is advisable not to overplay puppies as it can be harmful to them.

Grooming

Their coat can be kept brushed, corded or clipped until they are a puppy and ten months old, during this period there is no grooming except cleaning its ears, trimming toenails and regular bathing. But as soon as they grow, their grooming becomes difficult and time-consuming as their coat has a cord and are not like other dogs. Their wiry coat requires separation timely to avoid matting. It will be advantageous to seek help from the professionals for maintenance and to maintain the grooming standards.

Health Problems

It is a healthy breed, but eye diseases and hip dysplasia are some common diseases suffered by them. However, regular veterinarian checkups and proper schedule will keep them healthy.

Training

They should be kept mentally active as they are brilliant, loyal and agile, which allows them to learn new things quickly. They are keen to please their owners and hence, they try to determine activities and commands in one go.  For this pet, it is essential to teach them various commands like sit, stop, yes, no, etc. Leash training is crucial to prevent them from chasing and running. Early socialization is also essential, it requires a firm and consistent trainer to train them.

Feeding

Dry dog food 1 ½ to 2 cups or protein-rich homemade foods are ideal and will fulfill their requirement for protein.
