History

The Schweenie is a crossbreed between the Shih Tzu and the Dachshund breed. The majority of Schweenie dogs get their height and physique from their Shih Tzu parents, and the rest receives the length of their Dachshund parents. They are known for their broad and muscular shoulders and big dark eyes. The two floppy ears add to their charming looks.

Interesting Facts

  1. Make a great companion and lap dog.
  2. Also, a great digger and are frequently found digging the yard area.
  3. Has an excellent memory and will remember even the slightest mistreatments made to it by anyone.

Temperament & Personality

These loving and smart dogs will be a great addition to any family. They have an eagerness to please people but may become moody and aloof at times. They are known to exhibit their destructive side if they are left alone for a prolonged period. These little wonders do not become aggressive unnecessarily but tend to chew their owner's hands while being outdoors. It will be a great playmate for the kids if socialized early.

Exercise

The Schweenies love to play and run around, irrespective of their small and compact size. Thirty minutes of daily walk is extremely important to satiate its activity needs. The owner should allow the dog to run freely in the house if the weather is harsh outside. These dogs will love to make new friends and enjoy their days in the puppy kindergarten classes.

Grooming

Schweenies are light shedder, so they need frequent brushing. The owner can avoid tangling and matting by brushing the dog’s coat twice or thrice a week. Trimming once every month will keep the hair short and manageable.

Health Problems

Some health concerns such as Patellar Luxation, Hip dysplasia, Portosystemic shunt, Brachycephalic syndrome, Dry eyes, and Bladder stones and infections can affect the dog. An occasional full body physical examination, especially for the joints is recommended.

Training

Schweenies can be easily trained because of their eager to please personality. As these dogs can get aggressive upon seeing an unfamiliar face, early socialization and obedience training is a must for this breed. The trainer should use some distinct methods to train the dog, but harsh commands and scoldings will hamper the overall training process. Praises and food rewards will accelerate training.

Feeding

Diet meant for the small breed will maintain the overall health of the Schweenie dogs. The owner should divide the meal into two to three servings instead of giving the dog one substantial meal in a day.
