History

Stephens’ Cur is a descendant of the Mountain Cur, but do not resemble its forefather. They have a rectangular body with an athletic appearance. Their body is characterized by an elongated back, with medium sized legs enabling them to move quickly everywhere. The head is well proportioned and compliments their overall appearance.

Interesting  Facts

  1. Typically used to catch small animals, these Kentucky angels have also been used to catch bears and mountain lions.
  2. Passionate lovers of this breed lovingly call them, Darkie.

Temperament & Personality

Being a hunting dog, Stephens’ Curs are naturally aggressive but are also lively. As a boon or may be a curse for the owner, these dogs are gifted with the natural tendency to mingle well with other dogs, especially the dogs of their size. But the owner should not trust them with small animals, such as cats and rabbits. It will make an excellent playmate for the kids. Because they are naturally wary of strangers, they also make an excellent watchdog.

Care

Exercise

As they are highly energetic and sporty, these dogs need a regular walk or a game of romp in the yard area. They need to burn off their energy daily, or else they will start with unnecessary barking and growling.

Grooming

This variety of Curs needs occasional brushing on the coat to remove dead hair and small insects. Bathing is only recommended when the dog gets dirty or muddy. Unnecessary bathing can ruin their natural distribution of oils throughout the body. The owner can prevent the onset of dental problems for the dog by brushing their teeth twice or thrice every week with a Vet approved toothpaste and toothbrush.

If the owner hears the dog scratching the floor, then it means the dog needs a nail clipping. The ears need to be cleaned by a neat and clean cloth, as there can be an accumulation of dirt in the form of wax in the ears.

Health Problems

No breed specific health issues have been recorded so far. But the owner should make sure that the Stephens’ Cur pups are well vaccinated before he buys it.

Training

To reduce their aggressiveness towards other small animals, the owner should introduce the dog to other animals, when the dog is still in its early puppyhood. Keep their chasing instincts under control by using commands such as stop, leave, and shh, when the owner sees the dog chasing animals or birds.

Feeding

The dog’s food chart should have dry food combined with canned food to maintain overall health. Instead of serving with a big meal, the owner should divide the meal into small portion.
