History

Toy Goldendoodle is a crossbreed between American Cocker Spaniel, Golden Retriever, and the Poodle. The breed originated in the early 2000s in the USA when combining purebreds were popular. It was purposely mixed by the breeders to produce a tiny dog. Hence, the breeders first decreased the female golden retrievers by crossing them with cocker spaniels; this resulted in a new dog named Golden Cocker Retrievers which were again mixed with Poodles. The result was a Toy Goldendoodles which has ¼ of Cocker Spaniel, ¼ of Golden retrievers and ½ of Miniature Poodles.

Temperament & Personality

Toy Goldendoodles are small in size with enormous dispositions. These dogs are very docile and develop a unique bond with their family members. They build an exclusive understanding of its human family due to their high intelligence level. This dog also makes ideal emotional support for the seniors. Additionally, they easily mix with unknown people, dogs, and children in the house.

They make a perfect apartment dog due to their miniature size. They stay quiet unless they find any suspicious activity inside its house which makes it perfect watchdog. This breed has inherited good qualities from its parents, but it gets stubborn sometimes and develops behavioral issues if the master is away for a longer duration.

Care

Exercise

ToyGoldendoodle is moderately active and doesn’t require extensive activity schedule. Short walks, play time in dog’s park or a fenced area with games like Frisbee, Fetch, etc. will be enough. During the rainy season provide with ample dog toys to keep it busy and offer mental stimulation.

Grooming

This breed does not require high maintenance as it is a minimum shedder. Due to its wavy, long and dense coat, brushing it twice a week is enough. It will remove the tangles, dirt and the dead hair from its coat. It will also distribute and maintain the natural oils keeping it soft and glossy. Its droopy ears retain moisture and wax, which will need weekly cleaning with an approved canine ear wash to prevent painful ear infections. Nails will require trimming two to three times a week with a nail clipper while teeth brushing every twice or thrice will avert tartar collection and tooth decay.

Random veterinarian checkups and occasional tests will keep the goldendoodle full grown dog healthy and fit. Even before buying one can ask the breeder about its parent's history of health problems.

Training

These dogs are easy to train as they can do anything to impress their owner. Early socialization will allow them to mix well with unknown people and other pets. Obedience and agility classes will make the dog learn the basic etiquettes. They do not require repetitions as they pick up instructions quickly. Positive training methods like praises, hugs, and treats allow the dog to learn tricks more efficiently and rapidly.

Feeding

Homemade nutritious food or 1 cup of commercial dry dog food will be adequate to keep up with its energy requirements.

How big do Mini-Goldendoodles get?

They are small toy dogs and would usually reach a maximum of 20 inches in height and weighing about 15 to 35 pounds. On an average, the height of these dogs remains around 17 inches.
