History

Tyrolean Hound is a medium-sized breed that was raised for hunting and tracking games in the mountain regions of Tyrol. This breed evolved from the Celtic Hounds, and was prized for their excellent scenting abilities. It is believed that these dogs were used by the people of noble birth. Tyrolean Hound got official recognition in 1906, and it was acknowledged in 2006 by UKC (United Kennel Club)

Temperament & Personality

It is a keen hunter with the capability to adapt to any weather conditions. This dog is famous for its smartness, independent personality and liveliness. However, occasionally it exhibits stubbornness. It is very friendly and makes the best companion. They also tend to develop a unique bond with family and becomes the best playmate for children. It is also shy with unknown people, but do not have any tendency to bite them without a reason. They are good with other canines only if they undergo proper socializing from the beginning.

Care

Exercise

These energetic dogs require intense exercise regularly. They do not like to live in small apartments and do well in houses with yards where they can play and move freely. Long walks and adequate playtime or visiting dog’s park will be sufficient. Also, play interactive games as it will provide stimulation.

Grooming

They have a dense coat which requires particular attention, and it needs brushing 2-3 times a week. It will remove dead hairs and keep its coat free of debris, dirt and maintain coat’s hygiene. Bath them randomly as they are prone to infections which are led by parasites. Additionally, their nails will need trimming when they overgrow. Their droopy ears tend to retain moisture leading to a painful ear infection. Brushing their teeth twice a week will keep with their oral health.

Health Problems

Tyrolean Hound is a healthy breed, but it suffers from Hip dysplasia and parasitic disease. The random veterinarian checkup will keep the dog healthy and fit.

Training

Early socialization will allow the dog to mix well with unknown people and other pets. Obedience and agility classes will also make them learn the basic etiquettes. They do not require repetitions and picks up instructions quickly.

Feeding

Divide meals just to make nutrition more fun. Commercial dry dogs food containing protein, carbohydrates, nutrients, and fats are all good this dog.
