History
Fox Terriers originated in the 1700s and its job was to lock or catch a fox and enable the hounds and the horseman to join tracking in an oven country. Their coats are white with bright patches to avoid being a fox during a hunt.
These dogs have been a perfect successful show dog since history. However, since the late 19th century, smooth and wire fox terriers are known as separate breeds with a distinguished registry and breed standard. The recognized kennel cubs did not identify the Wire and Smooth Fox Terriers as different breeds until 1985.
Temperament & Personality
Wire haired Terrier is intelligent, alert, confident and loves to explore the world. They are also highly energetic and get well with the children of the family. However, supervision is required as these lively dogs can knock kids down out of excitement. Bigger dogs make them uncomfortable and can even start fighting with them. It is better not to keep the other pets unless they are properly trained.
Fox terrier puppies can become excellent watchdogs and pick up tricks and tips very quickly. They are great explorers and act mischievously sometimes by running into the yard and exploring the kitchen table. Wire Fox Terrier like playing in the water and are also fond of balls and toys. They also have unique skills in escaping and jumping. Their owners should always check the yards to check if they have dug holes to flee.
Exercise
Wire Fox Terrier are very energetic dogs and require physical and mental activity to prevent developing odd behaviors like digging and chewing. Adequate space to run with long walks or jogs will shed their excess energy. They are fond of eating which can sometimes make them overweight. Food intake requires supervision, and regular exercise will keep them in the perfect shape.
Grooming
Its wiry coat does not require high maintenance and brushing once a week with a firm bristle brush will remove all the dead hairs and dirt from its coat. Bath them when its necessary or extremely filthy. Also, stripping their coat occasionally will make them look good. Frequent stripping maintains their gloss, shine texture and prevents it from becoming wiry and rough.
Additionally, their nails will need trimming when they overgrow. Their droopy ears tend to retain moisture leading to a painful ear infection. Hence weekly ear inspection is a must. Brushing their teeth twice a week will keep their oral health.
Health Problems
Wire Fox Terriers are healthy dogs, but it can suffer from few health issues. Some diseases it is known to suffer from are eye disorders like primary lens luxation, cataracts, and glaucoma), elbow and hip dysplasia, luxating patellas and a neurological condition known as “wobbler’s gait.” However, random veterinarian checkups and occasional tests will keep the dog healthy.
Training
The dog needs adequate training to develop the simple etiquettes. They need proper socialization from early days to behave normally when they grow up. They have chasing habits due to their hunting instincts, which is why they should be given leash training to prevent them running after smaller animals like cats, birds, and other pets. Crate training is also recommended for this dog but harsh training methods will adversely treat the dog. Hence, positive training methods will allow them to pick up tricks quickly. Early socialization will train the dog to behave correctly with the unknown people. Moreover, with sufficient training, these dogs will become amusing, exciting and trusted companions.
Feeding
Commercial dry dog food of high quality is suitable for this breed. Dividing meals into two halves will keep the digestion on track.
