Nowadays people regard ‘designer dog breeds’ as those canine breeds that have been developed or rather designed by crossing one purebred breed with another. Therefore a ‘designer dog’ is essentially a cross-breed or a mixed breed dog that is created to accomplish specific requirements. Thus the very first designer dog ‘Labradoodle’ created by crossbreeding a Labrador and Poodle had the personality of its larger parent and the hypoallergenic coat of its other parent.
However, technically speaking almost all domesticated dog breeds known to humans happen to be designer dogs. Nearly all dog breeds have originally descended from wolves and vulpine whose genetics were further modified by humans and therefore can be regarded as ‘designer breeds’.
