Mountain dogs are so called largely because their origins can be traced to the different mountainous regions around the world. Majority of the mountain dog breeds traditionally worked alongside humans safeguarding livestock from prowling predators such as duffers, bandits, and wolves. Nowadays hunting dogs like Bernese, St. Bernard, Anatolian Shepherd Dog, Great Pyrenees, Caucasian Shepherd Dog, Kuvasz, Tibetan Mastiff, and Appenzeller Sennenhund either herd cattle or serve as search and rescue dogs.
