Retriever dog breeds specialize in tracking game birds or other small preys shot down by hunters, such as the Golden Retriever or the Labrador. Gun dogs and hunting dogs come across as excellent retrievers as these canine breeds were originally reared for assisting hunters. Though many dog breeds may have a predisposition to retrieve, AKC recognizes only six breeds as good retrievers.
These six breeds are Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, Curly Coated Retrievers, Flat-Coated Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, and Labrador Retrievers.
