History

Kenn Mollett, London breeder, introduced this breed in the 20th century after getting inspired by the similar dog which as popular during the Victorian times. It resembles like an English Bulldog with just a larger size. The dog has a muscular build and a large head with unique bulldog underbite. The exact origin is not known, but in recent years it is showing up for sale in the USA. Any major kennel club or AKC do not recognize Victorian Bulldog.

Temperament & Personality

Victorian Bulldogs are loyal and sober which is the main feature of the Victorian Bulldog. The dog has the usual characteristics of the bulldog. They love the company of people and are termed as, “people’s dog.” These dogs are attention seekers and can do anything to see attention. The dog makes an ideal family dog because it is good with children and other pets. Though, without proper training, the dog sometimes becomes aggressive with other pets in the house. They are the most dependable, docile and affectionate dogs. They have a protective instinct which makes them an ideal watch dog. Moderate climate suits this dog as they take a very long time to cool down once it is heated up in humid temperature.

Exercise

This breed requires moderate amount workout every day, as they are not very active dogs. Therefore, if their exercising needs are met, they can be easily kept in an apartment. Like other breeds, it also requires regular walks and jogs every day. Allow the dog to play in a park or yard as they will remain inactive indoors. Playtime will not only keep the dog busy, but it will also keep them mentally stimulated.

Grooming

They have a short coat and brushing them twice or thrice a week with a bristled brush will keep their coat clean and dirt free. Bathe them when they are incredibly filthy. Like other breeds, it also requires particular attention for its kin folds. It is very easy for the dirt to settle inside the folds and might give the skin problems. Therefore,  cleaning these folds with a damp cloth is essential.

Additionally, their ears will retain moisture and wax collection and require checking every week to ward off painful infection. Tooth brushing twice a week will keep up with its oral health and baffle tartar development.Their nails grow very fast and need reviewing every week overgrown nails will require clipping with a clipper.

Health Problems

Selective breeding bred these dogs among healthy individuals. Hence they are severe and hereditary issues are scarce in them. However, the owners should have known about the bulldog’s skin problems and should take them to veteran occasionally.

Training

Victorian Bulldog respond very quickly to obedience training. They are intelligent dogs and interactive which makes preparation very easy. These dogs easily relate to their trainer and pick up exercise very fast. Punishment or harmful training methods will get things wrong, but a definite training method will allow the dog to learn things very fast.

Feeding

Victorian Bulldog requires a raw diet like other bulldog breeds. An only meat diet is advisable as they used to have bones, stomachs, and intestines in early days. Amongst all the dogs, the only bulldog cannot bear intake of excess protein in their diet as it gives them hot spots. Apart from meat, bones and other animal parts, it also needs fruits, raw eggs, yogurts and half cooked vegetable to get a balanced diet.
