Canine Diarrhea

Diarrhea like conditions is very prevalent in Man's best friends. Many times, the condition can occur because dogs have a tendency to taste anything which comes across their way. Diarrhea can also be caused by more severe medical issues, some of which may need close monitoring, primarily if diarrhea occurs frequently.

The owner should watch for signs like loose stools which is the main indicator of diarrhea. Signs and symptoms of diarrhea can also include loss of appetite, being nauseatic or frequent vomiting, weight loss, occasional pain in the abdomen, laziness and some other basic symptoms of this condition.

Main Reasons for the occurence of this condition

Diarrhea mainly develops because of these following reasons:

1.A dog’s natural scavenging behavior

3.A sudden diet change

A dog can certainly have Chronic Diarrhea. In both normal and the chronic variation of this condition, the reasons are more or less the same:

1.Dietary intolerance or allergies

2.The sudden onset of stress

3.Giardia infections

4.Hookworms infections

5.Roundworm infections

6.Whipworm infections

7.Bacterial infections

8.Different pancreatic disease

9.Inflammatory bowel disease

10.Irritable bowel syndrome

Some other causes of chronic diarrhea can specific form of cancers, and conditions outside of the gastrointestinal tract.

Immediate action against combating diarrhea

In the cases of young pups or even older dogs, they can have a history of certain health condition which can trigger the development into diarrhea. If the owner senses the presence of diarrhea, he should always call upon the vet. He will be the one who will give proper advice on how to handle an animal with diarrhea. If not treated in its initial form, a diarrhetic dog can become severely debilitated.

Also, give a call to the vet if diarrhea becomes frequent with watery excreta. If one sees more than just a streak of blood or darkish tarnish stools, or if your pet vomits massively, a call to the vet will be an ideal option. Laziness, depression, or pain are signs of dangerous health conditions.

But, if the canine is a healthy and reasonable animal, the owner can try out some home remedies.The owner will have to make sure that the dog frequently drinks clean water to avoid dehydration. Our furry friends can also be a fussy drinker, so the owner will have to encourage the dog to drink water frequently. If needed,  the owner can also provide a chicken in dilute form, beef broth alongside water.

Diarrhea prone breeds

Few canines are predisposed to develop diarrhea. We can study the case of German shepherds as they have an increased prevalence of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. Young pups are predisposed to suffer from infectious and parasitic diarrhea than older dogs.


1.Frequent canine vaccinations in very crucial.

2.The owner will have to make sure that the pet is free of parasitic worms by obeying the vet’s recommendations.

3.The owner will have to make sure that the dog does not have access to spoiled food or garbages.

4.When having a walking session, the owner will have to make sure that the dog does not eat anything off the street or any plant material. Even drinking from puddles is not allowed.

5.The owner will have to make sure that the dog does not ingest feces from other animals.

6.The owner will have to reduce the stress in the dog’s environment.

7.If the owner has to shift or switch off the dog’s food, it’s a great idea to introduce it slowly and gradually, every time mixing it with the dog’s current food. It will ensure a smoother transition for pet’s GI tract.
