History

The Havamalt is a designer breed that is developed by crossing the Havanese and the Maltese. Since it, a new breed, not much is known about its origin, but its parents can determine its features.

Temperament and Personality

The amiable, tender and affectionate nature of the dog makes them perfect for a family pet. They love human companionship and are very faithful towards them. Often they are found roaming with their owners which indicates that they do not like to be left alone for a prolonged period. They are compatible with other pets and humans equally, showing calm and loving behavior. Since they bark less and are distracted quickly, they do not make good guard do.

Care

Exercise

It is an indoor dog, so it does not require much of outdoor activities. Take them for daily leash walk and let them play games like fetching in a fenced area. Also, give them enough toys to stay busy within the apartment.

Grooming

Brush its coat regularly to prevent tangling and mats. It requires bathing every week to clean up its dirt and use conditioning oil to remove mats softly. Check its ears weekly and consult a vet if they have a bad odor. Also, brush its teeth two to three times a week to prevent periodontal disease.

Health Problems

It is a healthy breed and has no significant health issues, but can be prone to some of the health conditions like hip and joint dysplasia, patellar luxation, cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy.

Training

The dog has the ability to learn quickly and respond well to commands. They can be aggressive while teaching that can have an adverse side effect on docile and easygoing dogs. Use calm and positive methods while training and avoid harsh tones. Reward basis training works best for these type of dogs.

Feeding

Provide the dog with ½ to 1 cup of high-quality dry dog food split into at least two meals a day. Do not leave the food near him for an extended period as it can encourage the pet to eat all the time. Also, give them treats and cookies sometimes to bring a change in their diet.
